STEVEN SPIELBERG’S WEST SIDE STORY SHOOK MY SOUL

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

One word. Jaw-dropping.

The fresh reimagination of the 1957 musical brought to the screen by Steven Spielberg was incredibly encapsulating. The cast revival of the spirit of the original West Side Story and choreography that has you saying “I can do that, here hold my drink!” leaves audiences in awe. Throughout the film, I was crying, cheering, and laughing on my living room couch!

Prior to the film’s release, I had only known of the song “I Feel Pretty” but not the significance of the film until now. Not only is it a twist on Romeo and Juliet, but the gang rivalry between the Jets and Sharks reflects issues within the U.S. as immigrants become victims of discrimination and xenophobia. Even after 65 years, the message is still relevant, and West Side Story once again explores racial and political issues.

Steven Spielberg is back at it again with the sublime directing. With the use of light and camera angles to immerse viewers into the action, every scene made me feel as though I was dancing in the school gym with the Jets and Sharks. It was incredibly immersive as it makes viewers think critically about his directing choices! It was certainly an out-of-body experience with fluid camera movements that emphasized the chaos and divide between the infamous Jets and Sharks. For example, the appearance of yellow light shining onto the characters quickened my heart’s pace knowing that danger was right around the corner.

Now, don’t get me started on the fabulous Ariana DeBose! She killed the role in playing Anita, commanding every scene she appeared in. The So You Think You Can Dance star delivered serene vocals and striking dance techniques that the film industry had been missing until now. Even with a sprained ankle, she nailed the “America” dance number leaping into the air, twisting, twirling, and running across the New York streets in heels! She was absolutely the cherry on top for the film, and quite possibly, my new favorite actress ever! I am definitely rooting for her to win “Best Supporting Actress” at this year’s Oscars (and if she doesn’t win, I’m picketing outside the Dolby Theatre).

Grab your favorite popcorn, dance shoes, and coziest blanket, and watch the film on Disney+ or HBO MAX today. You are not going to want to miss this masterpiece.
