It’s September. School is back in full swing. After enduring a harsh heatwave, many look forward to cooler autumn days. You might even be tempted to pull out your “Sad Girl Fall” playlist to set the mood. No matter how you celebrate this time of year, fall is a season of transition from summer to winter and with it comes a transition in wardrobe!

It’s time to put away all the summer dresses and shorts for some layers to accommodate to the changing weather. Spring and summer styles this year were dominated by Y2K trends, and with low rise jeans and quirky baby tees coming back into style, it’s safe to say that the Y2K aesthetic is here to stay for this fall as well. For anyone looking to revamp their wardrobe or simply looking for style inspiration, look no further than Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls is a comedy-drama series that ran from 2000 to 2007, spanning seven seasons. The television series follows the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, a mother and daughter duo who share a close relationship and live in the picturesque town of Stars Hollow. Some of the show’s most iconic and memorable episodes take place in the fall/winter seasons and overall have a very warm and comforting tone. On social media, the show has been declared a staple binge rewatch to welcome the autumn season.

With that said, it’s time to dive into what exactly makes the fashion of the show and how it can help shape our fall wardrobes today. The beginning of the series follows Rory Gilmore attending Chilton High School, a private and prestigious school. Of course, at such a private and prestigious school, students wear school uniforms. The uniform is rather typical, consisting of a blue blazer, blue plaid skirt, and knee high socks. You might be wondering why this is being brought up and how it could possibly influence your wardrobe. The preppy look can be adopted and personalized to your own taste. The standout of the outfit, of course, is the plaid preppy skirt, which has been popping up on Brandy Melville and other clothing brands’ websites. The preppy skirt seems to be replacing the popularity of the tennis skirt that was very trendy not long ago.

The Chilton look is the image that may first come to mind when talking about Gilmore Girls fashion. However, after rewatching the series, I have made note and compiled a list of other clothing items used throughout the show that are staples of Y2K autumn fashion and helped shape the aesthetic of the show. Such clothing items include cable-knit sweaters, leather jackets, slip dresses, shearling-lined corduroy jackets, and mini skirts. Oversized cable-knit sweaters, such as the one that Rory wears in the first episode of the show, are sure to be a hot trend for this fall. The clothing item, which can be accompanied with either a plaid skirt or a pair of low rise jeans and boots, is sure to give you that fall semester look as you head on over to the library to get your “study” on.

It could be that you are looking for more of a Saturday date night outfit. No problem. Put on a Lorelai Gilmore slip dress, throw on a sleek leather jacket, and you are ready to have a fun night out in the city. If you simply want a warm and cozy autumn feel, throw on a turtle neck, that shearling-lined corduroy jacket, and your favorite low-rise jeans and head over to Starbucks to enjoy a pumpkin spice latte.

These clothing items are sure to give you a cute fall wardrobe and help you achieve the Gilmore Girls aesthetic, but I’d argue they’re staple closet items that are worth investing in since they’re timeless.
