The Evolution of Sentiments and Emotions Your First Week Back

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

(as illustrated through nifty, Buzzfeed-esque GIFs)

Monday: After that long (though absolutely necessary) winter break, you’re finally settled back into your dorm or apartment and can reveal the “real you” only your college roommate or bestie would understand.

But after all that excitement, you know it’s best to hit the sack early for your “first day of school.”

Tuesday: You start your Tuesday morning blasting some confidence boosting music sung by Queen B.

(The correct answer is #flawless)

Backpack and screenshot-of-schedule-on-iPhone in hand, you’re ready to take on the first day of school.

You walk in to your overpacked class and can already start to smell the scent of early onset despair—but no worries, you’re on top of things and going be above the curve this semester.

Wednesday: All the annoying people you thought you had left behind in those prereq courses are still in the same class as you.

The professor that got a 4.8 on RateMyProfessor who you thought was super cool decides to assign homework on the first day of lecture…

…and you realize you’re not quite emotionally/psychologically/physically ready for that yet.

So you resort to using your seemingly infinite number of meal points on copious amounts of only sort-of decent buffet-style food.

Thursday: Realization sets in that the class you thought would be a breeze (at least relatively) is anything but.

Those memories of the good times on break and long hours of sleep begin to fade as insecurities about your course load lead to you intensely working on homework not due for another week and a half.

Though it doesn’t matter how many assignments you finish—you end up in the Facebook “bubble” for two hours you go right back to being stressed.

Friday: You wake up wondering why you signed up for so many classes.

(and then you proceed to drop one and take an awesome DeCal instead.)

You just want to be finished with your first week of school already.

And party on home:

(Though you’ll probably end up just eating C.R.E.A.M. or doing laundry #struggle.)

Saturday: Forget about the qualms of this coming semester—netflix binge is calling your name.

The hardest decision now is whether it’ll be Scandal or Orange is the New Black.

Sunday: “The weekend is almost over,” you wistfully think.

All the feelings you had set aside about the next 15 weeks at college during your “little” TV marathon watching come crashing on you all at once.

“What if I don’t make new friends in clubs? What if I’m below the curve? Why must I have three finals in one day?” you think.

But then you find those nuggets of purpose and confidence buried within you and you think:

With a little hard work, lack of sleep and a best buddy by your side, you can surely rock this semester.

(Worst-case scenario, there’s always 4.0 hill to roll down.)
