3 Self-Care Priorities There’s No Shame in Being Bougie About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Because it feels good to look good.

1) Hair

In high school I did most of my shampoo and hair product shopping at CVS, buying Pantene, Herbal Essences- the usual. When my mom took me to her hair salon during my senior year, one of the hair stylists convinced me to buy a shampoo from the salon that was on the pricier side. After using it just once, the difference in texture and shine was impeccable. Changing up your hair creates a completely different look, and who doesn’t love the feel of super softness? Try Bumble & Bumble gentle shampoo with B&B’s super rich conditioner for ultra-soft, and SugarBear hair gummies to keep the shine going. Plus, B&B products are completely paraben-free, which most drug store hair products are not.

2) Skin

Who doesn’t love super clear skin? I feel like every time I’m looking at someone enviously it’s because of their skin. Waking up to the sight of pimples and blemishes just makes for a bad start to the day. Try Care Plus everyday skin cleanser for acne-free skin and Nia Glow On-Demand for super shine, because let’s be real- if you look tired, you feel tired.

3) Nails

Having nice nails is like the secret to instantly feeling like you have your shit together. Feeling lost in life and a little dead inside? Get a manicure! Show off those French tips and you’re basically a CEO. Getting a manicure in itself is the most relaxing cure to a bad day. Chanel Le Vernis nail colour in rouge noir has just the right sense of professionalism and wintery feel.

Melody A. Chang

UC Berkeley '19

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.
