5 Albums that Turned 10 this Year that I Haven’t Stopped Listening To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

This year seems to have a flood of amazing albums turning 10 and it blows my mind. As I look back on 2007 in terms of music, I realized there are several albums that impacted me as a music lover that still hold special places in my heart to this day. I’ve decided to fill myself with nostalgia, so here are five albums that came out 10 years ago that still mean the world to me.

1)      Paramore- Riot! I’ve always been a huge Paramore fan, aside from their latest release “After Laughter” but out of all their albums, “Riot!” will always be my favorite. I remember this coming out when I was about 11 years old, but its songs spoke volumes for me. My sister was a huge influence over my music taste because she was three years older than me, so we would always listen to this album together. I remember “Riot!” helping me through moving across the country from Ohio to Wyoming and adjusting to a new school. Hayley Williams was a major role model for me because she was this badass female lead singer with bright orange hair that embraced who she was. I used her example to remind myself to always be true to who I was. This album helped me keep that promise to myself and will always remind me of overcoming the challenging parts of life, like the move. My all-time favorite song off this album is “Fences,” but “crushcrushcrush” is always a jam, too.

2)      Fall Out Boy- Infinity on High I was in shock to see this album is already 10 years old because I still listen to it like it’s brand new. Fall Out Boy is another one of those bands that I always listened to because of my sister, but I’m forever thankful. I ended up meeting Fall Out Boy without expecting it, which makes their music that much more meaningful to me. This album isn’t my favorite of theirs per se, but it has a lot of good jams on it that remind me of junior high when I listened to them the most. My favorite song off this album is probably “Hum Hallelujah” or “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race.” (It’s just too fun to blast through the speakers, sue me.) But of course, “Thnks fr th Mmrs” is too good to skip when I listen to this album.

3)      Metro Station- Metro Station I’d be lying if I said this album didn’t shape my life in some way, no matter how funny it is now to go back and listen to it. I vividly remember “Shake It” being super popular when I found this album and it was my favorite song for several months. After buying the album with my babysitting money, it turned out to be one of my favorite albums that year. I love to put it on and reminisce on how cool I thought I was because I loved Metro Station, but now, it’s hilarious to hear how dramatic Trace Cyrus’ voice is. No matter what, it’s still a gem of an album and I remember every word. My favorites are “Now That We’re Done,” “Kelsey” and “Shake It” because that song is what got me to pick up the CD in the first place. Nothing throws me back to junior high than Metro Station, it’s so nostalgic.

4)      Maroon 5- It Won’t Be Soon Before Long Maroon 5 was the first band I ever loved and “Songs About Jane” was the first album I ever purchased on my own at 7 or 8 years old. I absolutely adored Maroon 5 for so long and I still love them, though their latest releases haven’t been very impressive, I turn on their older works when I miss them. This album “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” was a pretty good album at the time. I think my biggest memory of this album is how huge the track “Makes Me Wonder” was and how it played everywhere I went. I realized Maroon 5 was getting bigger with every album which was my first experience of this growth with a band. Seeing an artist you’ve loved since the beginning become super famous is bittersweet. “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” has plenty of great tracks, but I think my favorite is “Goodnight, Goodnight” because it’s so sad and its lyrics really stuck with me when I heard it for the first time. I still turn on this track when I’m having a rough day, it never gets old.

5)      All Time Low- So Wrong, It’s Right I saved this one for last because it’s in my top five favorite albums of all time, no question. It’s a masterpiece from start to finish and is truly All Time Low’s best work. I used to be a huge fan of “Dirty Work” and called that album my favorite, but the longer I listened to All Time Low, the more I realized “SWIR” is where it’s truly at. My favorite All Time Low song is on this album and some of the other songs on it were the soundtrack to my high school career. I bumped this album a lot throughout those four years and I will always look at this album as a remedy and escape to the best times I’ve ever had. After seeing some of these songs live, it made this album that much more special to me. If you haven’t heard this album, it’s worth the listen. My favorite is “Six Feet Under the Stars,” but I also love “Poppin’ Champagne,” “Shameless” and “Remembering Sunday.”

It’s crazy to look back on these albums because they don’t feel 10 years old, but it’s only because of their impact on my life. I have these albums to thank for shaping the music I love today and will always remember how these albums made me feel in the moment I discovered them.
