Meet Brooke, an empathetic kind-hearted soul with a passion for making a difference in her community. Brooke is graduating this June and is finishing up a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. In her spare time, Brooke is an avid reader and loves to travel and be outside. She is a fan of eating out and exploring all the different restaurants in Victoria.
Brooke has been involved with a few organizations on campus, but in her final year has decided to focus on two. The first is the UVic Student Ambassadors. The goal of UVic Student Ambassadors is to engage students and alumni. Ambassadors aim to enhance each student’s academic and social life. Throughout the year, Student Ambassadors partners with other organizations on campus to put on events. One well known event is De-Stress Fest! It happens every semester in between the ending of midterms and the arrival of finals. Puppy Playtime is put on in the SUB and free stuff is frequently handed given to de-stress students during the busy time of year.
Brooke is also involved with peer helping. Peer helpers are student volunteers who offer social, emotional and academic support to fellow UVic students. This peer-to-peer support system provides training from UVic Counseling Services so volunteers can better help and support others. Volunteers are required to do about 6 hours per week minimum so it is quite the commitment but well worth it. Being a peer helper has made Brooke realize that counseling is definitely a career she wants to pursue. If you are interested in gaining support skills this is something to get involved with.
Recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the Student Ambassadors 2013-2014 year, Brooke intends on becoming even more engaged next semester. She wants to make sure students are aware of more events and all the resources that are available to them.
