Top 5 Games You Need to Play in 2016

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

In recent years, a surge of story-based video games has been released. This seems to be a big hit for many gamers, especially beginners, as they allow you to choose the game’s storyline and it is a bit less repetitive since your choice changes the entire plotline of the game. That being said, I have also included some action games on the list, for those who are more interested in that genre. Please note that these games are in no particular order. They are merely games that I found to have risen in popularity in the recent years as they seem to live up to their potential.

1) The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a great game for those interested in post-apocalyptic action/adventure games. It is a single-player game with a multi-player campaign mode available for PS3 and PS4. You play the game using a third-person perspective and travel to various locations, while using stealth and weapons to defend yourself against the humans, as well as various other creatures. Its storyline and fantastic graphics attracts gamers to this game.

2) Until Dawn

Sticking to the whole horror genre, Until Dawn is a great game to play for story-driven gamers. In this game, you decide the fate of all the characters and your choices determine the game’s story. Having so many options to choose from makes the game replayable, and each time you will be given the opportunity to make different choices. Until Dawn is a single player game available for PS4 and focused on character interactions, location explorations, and choice selections.

3) Life is Strange

If you are really interested in the story-driven games, Life is Strange is just the game for you. It is a single player, third person adventure game where your choices determine the entire storyline. However in this game, you have to ability to rewind at certain points in order to redo certain actions. It is a game that was released in episodes, each episode acts as the next chapter of the story. Now that all of these episodes have been released, you are able to purchase all of them. They are available for Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

4) Destiny

Steering away from the story-based games, Destiny is a great game for those who prefer multiplayer, first-person shooter games. You are placed into the world as a Guardian protecting the Earth with your Light power. There are three subclasses to choose from for characters including Hunters, Warlocks and Titans each having their own abilities that contribute to the gameplay. If you love campaign-based games with not much storyline, you will love playing Destiny. It is available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

5) Fallout 4

The post-apocalyptic genre seems to be popular across various different mediums including movies, games, TV shows and more. Fallout 4 is another post-apocalyptic game with first and third-person perspectives available. You have the ability to play in an open world which makes the game less repetitive, as you get to choose your gameplay. You are able to interact with other characters, explore different locations on the map, and defeat enemies. This is a single player action role-playing game available for Windows, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
