Studying Tips and Tricks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Sadly winter break has ended and we are once again being bombarded with piles and piles of work. It may be hard to get back into the studying mode but it must be done. If you’re still set to relaxation and are having trouble concentrating, here are a few tips to get you back on track!

Change your environment. The chilly weather is no reason to be confined in your home where there are a million distractions. Braving the below zero temperature will help wake you up. Even though Robarts can be a cold, heartless place it can also be the perfect setting to hit the books.Bundle up in a chair with a hot drink and even a blanket if need be. If you have already been there and done that, then you can always try a different library. The colleges all around campus offer quiet study areas, not to mention Gerstein Centre and Hart house. A local coffee shop or a friends place is always another option if you are looking to get off campus.

Find a study buddy. The only issue with this is keeping focused. Sometimes when you plan on working with a friend, very little actual school work can get accomplished. This does not automatically mean you can only learn and get things done alone. Having another person around is good for moral support, discussing concepts or simply asking questions.

Take breaks. Studying for hours straight is not a good thing. You will feel exhausted both mentally and physically. That’s why it is important to take a breather every now and then, just make sure they aren’t too long. Ten minutes is plenty of time. Instead of going on Facebook during your break, get up and move around. Put on your favorite song and bust a move to get the blood pumping.

Plan things out. Try making a schedule and sticking to it. Sometimes seeing things written out will help you realize just how much and what you have to do. Being able to cross things off your list gives a satisfying feeling of accomplishment.

Here are a few last reminders, remember if it is impossible, concentrate on one subject, then change to another and return to the other one later. Also, complete silence may not always be the best thing. Some people actually focus better when they listen to music in the background. Just play something that will aid in your learning process and not let your mind wander. Eat healthy throughout the day and get plenty of rest. Once you start building a routine you will naturally get accustomed to studying in a certain area and way. When all is done and said the best way to do something is to just try and do it. Good luck!

Natalie has recently completed her second year at the University of Toronto with a double major in History and Ethics, Society, and Law. She is excited to bring Her Campus to U of T and seeing it expand its presence in Canada. She is also active in the school's Model United Nations circles and numerous organizations off campus and is best described as a political and pop culture junkie. Born and raised in Toronto, she is blindingly proud of everything the city has to offer including the best school in the country, no matter what Macleans says, and its sports teams, no matter how many times they may lose or miss the playoffs.
