The Single Collegiette’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and for many of us single girls it’s just another reminder that we don’t have someone special in our lives. But really why is that so bad? This Valentine’s Day, forget Prince Charming and drop the forever alone attitude. Many collegiettes choose to be single and willingly embrace the single life. Others are simply just too busy to properly invest in a relationship. Or maybe your boyfriend goes to school in a different city and can’t make it back in time for Valentine’s Day. Whatever your reason, just because you’re spending Valentine’s Day alone doesn’t mean it has to be depressing or boring. So here’s a list of things to do this Valentine’s Day if you’re a single collegiette:

  1. Pull a Leslie Knope and celebrate Galentines Day!

Technically Galentine’s Day takes place the day before Valentine’s Day but it’s still a good idea that can be extended to the fourteenth. Get together with your girlfriends and head for a relaxed night out with the girls. Go to a great restaurant and indulge, preferably with something that involves chocolate and a lot of carbs. Try a new type of cuisine, or a restaurant with a unique dining aspect like a fondue bar, or even just something that is completely out of your budget.

  1. On that note… Girls’ Night In

Call all your single girl friends over and spend the night in. Bake cookies, play board games, host a dinner party, whatever you want to do it’s always more fun when you’re surrounded by your best friends.

  1. Embrace your inner child with your friends.

How many times have you gotten together with your friends at the mall? It gets tiring after a while and on Valentine’s Day it’s a constant reminder of all the Valentine’s Day gifts that you won’t be receiving. Some of my fondest memories as of late have included doing things like going to Dave and Buster’s or playing mini golf. This winter, try going sledding or tobogganing or go to Nathan Phillip’s Square and go skating. These activities might seem childish but they really are so much fun and are a great reminder of simpler times.

  1. Vegetate.

Sit back and relax. It’s the middle of the semester and we’re all stressed. So grab a Lush bath bomb, a copy of Pride and Prejudice, and unwind. Maybe do some online shopping or re-watch your favourite movie/TV show on DVD while sipping on some champagne. You really can’t go wrong with taking some time for yourself.

  1. Remember that it’s just another day.

In reality, what many of us will probably be doing is studying. Personally, I have a paper due on the 14th and I know that I will probably be spending the night trying to unwind from an all-nighter spent finishing said paper. My guess is that, unfortunately, many of you will be in a similar situation but at least we can all look forward to the promise of discounted candy on the 15th.

Natalie has recently completed her second year at the University of Toronto with a double major in History and Ethics, Society, and Law. She is excited to bring Her Campus to U of T and seeing it expand its presence in Canada. She is also active in the school's Model United Nations circles and numerous organizations off campus and is best described as a political and pop culture junkie. Born and raised in Toronto, she is blindingly proud of everything the city has to offer including the best school in the country, no matter what Macleans says, and its sports teams, no matter how many times they may lose or miss the playoffs.
Vanessa is a third year student at the University of Toronto. She is majoring in Employment Relations with double minors in Sociology and Human Geography. She is excited to start the Fall 2012 year as the new Campus Correspondent after a year of being a contributing writer for the Chapter.
