No-Fuss and Fabulous: Summer Beauty Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

We have finished finals. The dog days of summer have arrived. The only thing we want to do is… NOTHING! We deserve days filled with minimum movement and absolute freedom. We feel as though we have an enormous stretch of road before us, lined with warm weather and the good times of summer. So instead of wasting time, let’s be low maintenance this summer and run out the door whenever our best friends text us, “Volleyball players. Woodbine Beach. Now.” Here are a few foolproof tips on how to stay fabulous while being one lazy lady.

Au Naturale Hair

Nothing says summer like natural, beachy waves. However, nothing kills summer like frizzy hair. The best thing you can ever do for your hair to ensure it’s good health is… condition, condition, condition! You don’t even need to buy expensive hair masks.

Coconut oil or olive oil can do wonders for your hair if you simply saturate your hair with one of these oils an hour before you shower. Wash your hair thoroughly and condition it with your everyday conditioner like you normally would, but when your hair is damp, add a tiny bit of coconut or olive oil to the palm of your hand and massage the ends of your hair. Make sure you don’t take the oil to the roots though or else your hair may become weighed down and greasy. Gently comb through your hair while still damp to ensure even distribution. (Quick Tip: Always be extremely gentle when combing wet hair. It is super fragile in this state and can easily break, creating more frizz.) Let your hair air-dry and once it is, you will notice a new-found lustre. Embrace the au naturale style! Your locks will love you for it!

If your hair is straight, but you still want the beachy waves, don’t use a curling iron! Repeat the steps above and while your hair is damp, put it in a braid and go to bed. You will wake up with healthy, undamaged waves!

The No-Makeup Makeup Look
There’s nothing worse then slapping on a ton of makeup on a hot summer day. Instead of having your makeup melt off, try wearing very little in strategic places!

Skin should be the number one priority. There’s no point in perfecting everything else if your base isn’t flawless. Instead of buying a tinted moisturizer for summer, simply mix your favourite foundation with your favourite face cream. The result will be a lighter, more natural, breathable layer which evens out your skin tone, and you use two things you already had!

For a foolproof lip, try out the Revlon lip butters. These babies are a lip gloss, lipstick, and lip balm all in one. Simply throw one in your handbag and you’ll be covered all day!

One very important step in a makeup routine is eyebrows. In my opinion, eyebrows come after skin in priorities. Though they are often over looked, they provide immense structure to the face. Make sure your eyebrows are groomed and clean at all times to ensure an even, youthful looking face. (Quick tip: The thicker your brows, the younger you look. So don’t over pluck!) Also, if you’re less than satisfied with your eyebrows even while they are groomed, take an eyeshadow and an angled liner brush or an angled brow brush and very subtly fill in any gaps in your eyebrows. The shade of eyeshadow you should use depends on your hair colour. If you’re blond, go three shades darker. If you’re a brunette, go three shades lighter. Just remember, don’t apply too much! We’re going for the No-Makeup Makeup Look here!

Last but not least, throw on a few coats of waterproof mascara, and you’re ready to go!

Go on, ladies! Slip on those flip-flops and throw on those summer dresses, and enjoy your summer! Don’t waste a minute of your summer, you’ve already got being fabulous down, now try being no-fuss! Happy summer!
