Grease Up! 3 Easy Ways to Incorporate Coconut Oil into Your Daily Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Coconut oil is becoming one of the versatile products of 2015. It can be used for cooking, cleaning, beauty, healthcare, and some uses that probably haven’t even been dreamed up yet. It is one of my favorite things to use on the daily, and the great thing is that it’s 100% natural. Here are my top 3 favorite ways to use this amazing oil.

1. As an Exfoliating Face Wash

I take a Ziploc container or glass jar, whatever I have to mix in, and add 4 tablespoons of room temperature coconut oil with either crystal salt, or raw coconut sugar/raw brown sugar. I mix that all together and rub it on my face in circular motions, leaving for around 5 minutes. Wash as usual, and I recommend using this mask before bed to really allow the oil to sink into your pores. This is also good if you experience acne scarring. I have had difficulties with this in the past, and by substituting my old face washes for coconut oil has diminished my scars noticeably.

2. Cooking

For any product I cook/bake that requires butter, I always substitute in coconut oil. It has the same creamy texture and tastes delicious! If you’re not someone who likes the taste of coconut (as if that’s possible!), you can purchase less concentrated oils and that coco-nutty taste isn’t as strong. You can make some really yummy stir fries with coconut oil, veggies, brown rice and avocado. As well, just ingesting the coconut oil on its own is very beneficial for your body. Coconut oil contains anti-fungal components that helps manage infections and has been proven to help contribute towards weight loss! #SummerBody2015

3. Conditioner/Hair Serum

When used in the proper dosage, Coconut oil has natural serum-like properties that help with split ends, hair breakage, and any heat damage you may be experiencing. You can heat up water and add coconut oil to it, for a less concentrated version. Alternatively, you can also heat up coconut oil alone for 30 seconds in the microwave. I like to apply it in small dosages to my split ends, or to my scalp. I leave for around 5 minutes and rinse out. Be careful as to not use a lot, because if you use too much your hair could get a bit greasy and it will be hard to rinse out for the next couple days.

Now that you have some ideas, get out and try these 3 ways to use your coconut oil! Get creative because it’s a really great ingredient that is great for your body in so many ways.
