5 Steps To A New Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

We’re already a month into the new year and still months away from spring but that’s no reason not to do a little cleaning. Whether you need a better system to arrange your closet or feel like a new look, simply follow the tips below for a quick and cheap solution to all your wardrobe problems!

  1. Find inspiration. Let your real self-shine through or change up your look if you are not satisfied.  The main goal is to feel comfortable in your own skin. Get out your scissors, stick tabs in magazines, or cut out your favorite looks and make a collage just to keep notes on them. The internet is another great way to see the various types of international fashion and blogs are an especially helpful place to look. It’s time to find what really makes you shine!
  2. Clean out your closet. In order to make room for the new you, you have to get rid of the old. Go through your closet and take out anything that you haven’t worn in over a year. Parting with clothes can be hard because you may think you will have a need for it someday. To make the transition easier pack away the things you do not love or wear regularly for storage. If in a few months you don’t find a need to look at them, then donate it to charity or give it to a friend or sibling.
  3. Shopping spree. Invite all your girlfriends over and have a clothes swap. Ask them all to bring over articles of clothing they never wear and make trades. You may not feel like your clothes are even worth it but remember: one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. At the end model all your new pieces for one another and stage your own mini fashion show!
  4. Get creative. You don’t have to be a master with the sewing machine. Just a few simple alterations can make the biggest difference. For example, take a fake flower and glue or sew it to an old sweater, instantly giving it a feminine touch. That dress that was so last season can be made into a cute shirt by carefully cutting it to make it shorter. The possibilities are endless.  Don’t be scared to try something a little out there.
  5. Organize. This will definitely help when you’re running late and can’t seem to find your favorite t-shirt. Think about color coordinating, or arranging in order from short sleeve to long sleeve. If space seems to be a problem, how about investing in some shelf dividers, double rods, and wall hooks. Place the items you wear most often in the front and those that you do not below or above.

You now have a fresh and hopefully more organized closet to make you feel and look brand new!

Natalie has recently completed her second year at the University of Toronto with a double major in History and Ethics, Society, and Law. She is excited to bring Her Campus to U of T and seeing it expand its presence in Canada. She is also active in the school's Model United Nations circles and numerous organizations off campus and is best described as a political and pop culture junkie. Born and raised in Toronto, she is blindingly proud of everything the city has to offer including the best school in the country, no matter what Macleans says, and its sports teams, no matter how many times they may lose or miss the playoffs.
