Trendy Coats & Outerwear: A Rundown to Layering this Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

It’s official — there are still six weeks of winter left, and that means more time for us to flaunt our winter fashion. And what’s more essential than outerwear in this cold weather? Here are some of this season’s outerwear trends in case you want to hop on some last–minute winter shopping that’ll last you through the next few weeks.

Oversized “Dad” Coats

When I think of a winter coat, it’s a classic wool coat with big buttons down the middle. For the past few years, oversized everything has been all the rage and this winter is no different. Take the classic wool or pea coat and get it oversized to make a “Dad coat” — an oversized boyfriend or dad-fit wool coat.

This style of coat is so versatile, with a twist to make it extra–trendy for this winter season. You can style this coat to look professional and polished or slouchy and laid-back depending on what you wear underneath.

Shackets

Fall fashion introduced us to the revolutionary shirt-jacket hybrid — the “shacket.” A thicker version of this trend has carried into the winter season as well. This is another variation on the classic wool coat, except this time it has the silhouette of a flannel or button-down shirt.

A button–down shirt may seem uncomfortable, but guess what? This trend has achieved the impossible. Fuzzy shackets are the perfect winter piece when you want a look that’s both cozy and fashionable.

Shackets can be dressed up or down. If you want a casual look, throw one on top of a matching sweatsuit. If you want to be dressier, you can wear a shacket over a more form-fitting top and pants, with some accessories; you’ll definitely turn some heads.

Leather Puffers

This one is for the more daring dressers. A combination of two more classics — the timeless leather jacket and the tried-and-true puffer — leather puffers add an edge to any simple look.

Leather has been, and continues to be, so in. This is another piece you can effortlessly style with any outfit, from casual to formal; it’ll instantly elevate your style.

Quilted Jackets

Wearing quilted or padded jackets is just like walking around in a blanket. This is another piece that doesn’t compromise comfort. Instead, it’s guaranteed.

These types of jackets are also a great way to layer without adding bulk. Since these coats tend to be made of a thinner material than larger wool or down jackets, they’re great for achieving a desirable, fashionably layered look. The quilted design also gives them another layer of detail.

Teddy Coats

An even comfier winter necessity is the teddy coat. These have been trendy for a few years, and remain so this winter. This season, these coats are available in all lengths, silhouettes, and colors, moving beyond the traditional teddy coat.

No matter what style you prefer, there’s probably a teddy coat version available. And what’s not to love about these pieces? They’re soft and cute! This style is also very accessible; almost every brand has their own version.

These are five outerwear fashion trends from the past season. Of course, what’s most important is keeping warm this winter, but why not look cute doing it?

If you style any of the jackets and coats above, you’ll definitely radiate fashion-blogger vibes! And best of all, every trend listed above is available at a variety of different price points and stores. Many trends begin on the designer brand runways, but now there are several affordable options for every article of clothing. No matter your budget, you can look fabulous!
