Karim Shafi ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

This week’s Campus Cutie is a handsome future doctor who splits his time between volunteering at The Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania and wrestling competitively. This trilingual, dog-loving cutie is a perfect example of the Penn motto “Work Hard, Play Hard.” Keep reading to find out how this hunky athlete charms the ladies without using any pick-up lines!

Name: Karim Shafi
Age: 21
Birthday: April 9, 1991
Year: 2014
Speaks: English, German, Spanish
Major: Biological Basis of Behavior, pre-med
Hometown: Wilmington, Delaware
Relationship status: Single

Extracurriculars: Wrestling, volunteering at CHOP (I do a lot of shadowing and have been working on deciphering x-rays), brother at ATO (the wrestling fraternity), Student Athlete Advisory Council Vice President
Most time-consuming aspect of your life at Penn: Wrestling
Weekend plans: I like to break my routine a little bit and take a little time off to recover and go out on Saturday nights…during pre-season and post-season, things get crazy.
Perfect spring break: I usually don’t get spring break because it’s during wrestling season…I don’t get Thanksgiving break either and only a couple of days before and after Christmas. I’d definitely love to go somewhere there’s a beach, I love traveling and absolutely adore Puerto Rico.
Favorite sport: Besides wrestling…football
Favorite music: I really like Coldplay, The Killers, The Roots and then classic stuff like Bob Marley and George Winston. My friends have gotten me into Dubstep…I keep an open mind…
Favorite TV shows: Game of Thrones, Scrubs
Favorite food: Chocolate peanut butter, a really good Brazilian steak, chimichurri sauce or Buffalo Chicken Pizza
Favorite restaurant on campus: Hummus, Sweet Green
First thing you notice about a girl: Her legs
Cats or dogs?: I don’t like cats, they hold grudges and are unfriendly. I’ve asked for a dog every year since I was six and finally got one when I was 20.
What do you find most appealing about girls at Penn?: They’re very cool, outgoing, adventurous and have interesting hobbies.
Perfect first date: Keep it moderately casual, definitely get some food somewhere ethnic but not too exotic, but it depends on the girl and what we’ve talked about and our common interests
What do you look for in a girl?: Outgoing, funny, every girl’s different, being easy to talk to is the biggest one
Do you believe in soul mates?: I believe that you have multiple, I don’t think that there’s only one person—there’s definitely more than one person for everyone
Do you believe in love at first sight?: No, because you may love the way someone looks but not their personality
Favorite pick-up line: I don’t really use pick-up lines, but whatever it takes to start a genuine conversation
Celebrity crush: Jessica Beal—great legs, has that athletic look and has had some badass roles, which definitely helps
College bucket list: Earn an All-American honors in wrestling; get into a good medical school; become fluent in Spanish; split a Vermonster at Ben & Jerry’s with a cute girl
