Foods to Beat Those Cold-Weather Ailments

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

Spring may be here, but flu season isn’t over yet. Change up your diet to get rid of your cold!

For a runny nose:
Cold weather often brings about the sniffles. Along with a travel-size pack of Kleenex, invest in some fat free milk. It’s a low-calorie source of vitamin D that will help boost your immunity and keep you healthy. Plus a glass in the morning is a great way to start your day!

For dry skin:
When the temperature falls, humidity also decreases. Dry air leaves the skin parched and in need of moisture. Including fish in your diet provides your body with the essential omega-3 fatty acids that lubricate and protect your skin cells, which in turn nourish your skin. Almonds and other nuts are also a great source of vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant that helps repair dry skin.

For the winter blues:
If you’re feeling groggy, unmotivated or just lacking energy, you may be suffering from the winter blues. Eating foods like oatmeal is a healthy way to get your carbohydrate levels up and stimulate the release of serotonin to your brain that will give you that energy you need.

For everything else:
As always, drinking water is important for any season or any health issue. Water helps to keep skin moisturized, supplies the brain with what it needs to function properly (and keep your mood positive) and also helps your body systems stay balanced during the season to fight off colds and other illnesses!
