Being stuck in quarantine all summer had me extremely bored, so I read a lot; and it just so happens that nearly every book I read focused on a female lead and was written by a female author. Now, I know it’s a bit late to talk about my summer reads as it has already fully transitioned into fall, but I am going to do it anyway. So, this is my list of all female authored favourite summer reads.

The Family Upstairs – Lisa Jewell

This was my favourite book I read all summer. It is full of twists and turns you won’t think is possible, and just when you think you’ve read all of the possible plot twists you can, Lisa Jewell hits you with another one. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone looking for a read they can’t put down.

In Five Years – Rebecca Serle

This was another book I could not put down. It follows Dannie, who wakes up five years into the future, and when she wakes up the next day she is back in her time. The book follows Dannie over those five years slowly finding herself back on that day she had dreamt about. Just when you think you’ve figured out the ending, believe me, you haven’t. This is honestly a great read about a young woman trying to find her place in the world, taking care of herself while managing friendships, relationships, and a successful career.

Beach Read – Emily Henry

I’m sure anyone who browsed the Indigo Summer 2020 Reading List has seen this book on there. It was one of the top reads for the summer. It’s a very cutesy romantic novel about two very competitive authors making a bet to write a book in genres they never have before. I was quite skeptical of how good of a read it would be through the first few chapters; however, it turned out to be one of my favourite reads of the summer and I would recommend this to anyone who loves romantic-like novels.

The House We Grew Up In – Lisa Jewell

This is the second, and definitely not last, Lisa Jewell book on my favourite reads list. This book is another amazing read that has you hooked from beginning to end. It follows similar themes as many of Jewell’s other books but is still completely different. Her writing always leaves me wanting more and every time I put one of her books down it leaves me pondering (and wanting to pick up another one).

99 Days – Katie Cotugno

This book was one, unlike the others, that I did not read in one sitting. However, I still enjoyed it immensely. It follows the character Julia over the 99 days of her summer; trying to navigate her ex-boyfriend, his brother, his new girlfriend, and his sister. It’s a great teen read. The reason I loved this book was because despite its focus on romance, the author also focuses on Julia’s self-growth as a person while trying to navigate the different relationships and hardships she is faced with.

If you don’t have the chance to check them all out, I would recommend sticking to Lisa Jewell’s novels. They are the stay up all night kind of read you will not put down. You can also check out these other fantastic books by female authors that I loved!

The Girls in the Garden – Lisa Jewell

The Third Wife – Lisa Jewell

We Were Liars – E. Lockhart

Flowers in the Attic (series) – V.C. Andrews

The Wives – Tarryn Fisher
