St. Patrick’s Day Activities to Do this Year in Ottawa

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

St. Patty’s day is one of the more party-crazy holidays of the year, so why not try to go to some fun activities this year? Since St. Patrick’s Day conveniently falls on a Friday this year, there’s no excuse to miss out. Get your green clothes and festive spirit, and hit some of these joints! If you’re feeling the weight of all your schoolwork, this occasion is perfect for letting off some steam and regaining some energy.

Hit up some Irish pubs

Ottawa has no shortage of Irish pubs, and some even double as nightclubs. A popular one is Heart & Crown, which has locations in the Byward Market, Barrhaven, and Preston. Not only is this a traditional Irish pub started over 30 years ago, but it even has live music events with an eventful dancefloor. Or, if you just want something casual, you can grab a seat at the regular bar or pub area.

Another Irish pub to go to for comforting eats is Aulde Dubliner & Pour House, which is also conveniently located in the Byward Market. It’s one of Heart & Crown’s locations (but it has a different name).

Another popular Irish pub is D’Arcy McGees, located on Sparks Street. Not only does it have excellent reviews for its authentic ‘Irish pub’ experience, but it has live music events on Fridays and Saturdays! Although this spot is located a little further away from campus than Heart & Crown, it’s undoubtedly a good option!

The best part of all of these locations is that they’re perfect for University of Ottawa students, since they’re only one train stop or one quick bus ride away from campus.

Go to some parades and events

With a holiday like this one, there are going to be parades and similar events. For instance, on March 11th, the Irish Society of the National Capital Region threw a St. Patrick’s Parade at Aberdeen Pavillion. It was a day filled with Irish culture, good food, and good vibes. (And this year marks the society’s 38th anniversary!)

Many nightclubs throw their own St Patrick’s events as well. At the popular nightclub The Show, you can hit up a St. Patrick’s celebration!

You could also check out the party hosted at Palace Nightclub on Dalhousie Street.

Like the pubs, both of these clubs are located incredibly close to the University, so there’s no problem when it comes to commuting.

Throw your own party!

If going out isn’t your thing, don’t be afraid to host your own little shin-dig! Get some green streamers, stir up some green cocktails, and invite all your friends! Although a more low-key way to celebrate, it can be just as fun. You could also head to the nearby Dollarama to stock up on green decorations and costume elements like glasses and hats.

However you plan on spending St. Patrick’s day this year, stay safe and have fun. These are just a few activities you could attend—there are surely more. So even if you’re stressed with school, take this occasion to have some fun!
