Practical Winter Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Canada is well known for its cold winters, which means that we, as fashionable people, struggle with looking trendy and staying warm.  This season, I’ve noticed a few interesting ways people have dressed to fight the cold temperatures.

If you’re into glamorous accessories, a fur neckpiece could be added to your outfit.  These remind me of the Great Gatsby with their white soft fur collars and incredible jewellery pieces.  These days, I could see someone wearing such a piece matched with a nice coat.

If you’re coming to our Fashion Show, Catwalk for Cure, on January 25th, you’ll see Bernice & Barclay’s collection. They are designers from Ottawa, who have an exciting collection for this season. One of their accessories are blue-ish green earmuffs, which can provide a nice pop of colour and they’re really soft and comfortable as well.

Bernice & Barclay’s long-sleeved wool dresses are perfect for a cosy night at home, a nice day at work or even for a party night with the girls.  You can check out the different dresses on their website: www.berniceandbarclay.com.

Scarves are always a popular accessory in the winter.  On your next shopping spree, instead of going for the usual kind of scarf, try to look for innovative and inspiring ones with unseen patterns or modern looks.   Usually, stores only have a small variety of scarves, so that’s why I prefer to find them on Etsy (for particularly stylish ones).  You can always find something worth the price and the originality.

Wool headbands are probably one of the cutest winter accessories I’ve seen this season.  They keep your ears warm and you can always be creative and style your hair to flow nicely around it.  Personally, I think it should always be in a nice bright colour. That way, it’ll bring attention to your face.

Wool trench coats are very stylish.  However, they only keeps you warm until the end of October.  So why not add a few layers.  I remember when my parents would tell me the same thing, and I would roll my eyes,  but the things is, you can always put on a nice a blazer, thick cardigan or even your favourite sweater over a dress shirt.  You’ll definitely look great with your inside outfit and by adding your coat on top, it’ll keep you warm for outside.
