We all know Mark Ruffalo as one of our favourite actors, from his role as Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his role in Thirteen Going on Thirty, and even his appearances in Now You See Me. However, not many people know about Mark Ruffalo’s extracurricular activities.

Mark Ruffalo is an avid activist for climate change! He spends his time between shooting and directing films fighting for our planet. Ruffalo himself stated that his passion for fighting for the environment began in 2011 when he became aware of how water was being contaminated in industrial processes. Since then, he’s worked tirelessly to continue to fight against climate change, and for the earth!

In 2011, Ruffalo took this newfound passion and established Water Defense, an organization which was dedicated to banning hydraulic fracturing in New York State. Water Defense spoke to the public about many communities and their lack of clean water, including Flint, Michigan.

It also had a large influence in Colorado, which led to Ruffalo supporting other organizations in Colorado including, Frack Free Colorado, an anti-fracking coalition.

Since then, Ruffalo has co-founded an environmental organization called The Solutions Project. This organization is working hard to ensure that all Americans will have access to 100% renewable energy by the year 2050. They were founded in 2013 and have been continuously working towards renewable clean energy under the direction of Gloria Walton. The company not only had a large focus on the environment, but equality as well. A large portion of their company is run by women of colour, this also includes supporting indigenous communities across the United States.

Over the years, Ruffalo has travelled the country fighting for a cleaner earth. On numerous occasions he has spoken in front of the United States Congress speaking about fracking, and the need to control certain substances.

In June 2015, Ruffalo partnered with Leonardo DiCaprio in creating the event “100%” in New York. Here, they advocated for clean and renewable energy by informing the public of its affordability.

Ruffalo’s activism does not end at the environment. He was seen supporting Standing Rock in 2018, along with many other Indigenous communities battling with pipelines. In addition, he has supported women’s reproductive rights throughout the United States, stating he is pro-choice.

Mark Ruffalo is an avid activist for our climate. He is so much more than just an actor.
