After tolerating four long months of a brutal Canadian winter, nothing excites us more than the beginning of spring. Except, perhaps, spring fashion. Forget about warm weather and actual sunlight. With spring comes bright new colours, beautiful textures, and, yes, floral prints.

Trends such as floral prints, trench coats, and flowy skirts are always in style for spring. This year, however, there are some new and bolder trends hitting the runway and filling our favourite stores. Take a look at five fun fashion trends for spring 2015!

1. Backpacks

It looks like sloppy backpacks are all the rage this season, both on and off the runway. This backpack makes you look both studious and cute whether you’re on campus or just hanging out downtown. I always like to think of Cher from Clueless when I see these backpacks because they are the perfect accessories for stylish students. This season, sloppy backpacks are coming in a range of sizes and styles. Find one that works for you and embrace your inner Cher.

2. Jumpsuits and Overalls

They’re back! Jumpsuits and overalls made quite an appearance last year and they are once again gracing our presence. While jumpsuits create a very structured and chic look for spring, overalls can be a very casual and easygoing alternative. If you’re looking for a jumpsuit, try out bold and fun colours. Finish off the look with a great pair and you are set. Overalls will be one of the most versatile pieces in your spring closet. You can dress them up with heels and or dress them down with a simple white tee and still look put together. Look for different washes and textures if you want some extra edge.

3. Yellow

This may be my favourite spring trend this year and I don’t know why. From the light shades of lemon to bright hue of canary, the colour yellow is taking over this spring. This colour pairs well with other spring inspired colours like pastel blues and pinks but can also make a bold statement when contrasted with other colours like bright blue, black, or white. Find a shade that makes your skin glow and get ready to shine this spring.

4. Sporty Chic

It’s minimal, modern, and an almost must-do this season. Sportswear is another trend we’ve seen take over runways and street style in the past year and it looks like it’ll be staying for a little while longer. Easy, comfy, and stylish don’t even being to describe this trend. Did I mention the awesome sneakers? Seriously, this trend is a perfect balance of simplicity and style. Look for sexy joggers and awesome mesh and perforated textures to create a functional and sporty, cool look.

5. 70’s are BACK!

Last but not least we have the 70s inspired trend. There is an overwhelming amount of suede, flowy hemlines, and fringed accessories this spring. Even flared denim seems to be making an appearance. Personally, I don’t think I could handle that much material around my ankles but I can appreciate the look. To achieve this boho-inspired look, go for long, flowy pieces, cropped tops, and high waisted pants.

Spring really is the most anticipated season of the year in Canada. We can’t wait to be rid of the cold weather and stuffy layers. Plus, all those beautiful, spring clothes are just waiting in the back of our closets. Let’s hope spring comes sooner than later so we can actually enjoy the season before it gets too hot.
