Big Hero 6, a Big Heroic Success

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Disney is known for its classic, happy, and charming movies that have graced our screens throughout the years with the likes of Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, Tangled, and most recently, the musical sensation of which we’ve only recently begun letting go, Frozen.

Marvel films, on the other hand, are fast-paced, action-packed thrillers that take your breath away, whether it be by the intensity of the action or the attractiveness of some of those superheroes.

So what happens when Disney takes a Marvel storyline and turns it into an animated movie by the name of Big Hero 6?

A magical movie experience that everyone is bound to marvel over.

At the heart of Big Hero 6, you find Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter), a 14 year old prodigy with a remarkable gift for robotics, and Baymax (Scott Adsit), the huggable marshmallow of a robot designed to be a personal healthcare companion. Together with a ragtag team of extraordinarily brilliant nerds who rely on their mental capabilities more than their physical strength, they form the Big Hero 6 team who set out to stop the destruction of their city of San Fransokyo, brought about by the wrath of a mysterious masked figure and his army of microbots.

Reading this, it probably sounds like an extremely bizarre concept to base a movie off of, but it is actually quite compelling because of its eccentricity. It takes ordinary concepts, such as the question of what it means to be a hero, and inserts them into a fantastical context that makes you see them from a different, yet still highly relatable, angle.

Walt Disney Animation Studios successfully blends together some of the most riveting elements of two movie powerhouses, taking the magic of Disney and the marvel of Marvel and putting it all together into a touching and exciting animation feature film.

Although the plot is nothing super original or cutting edge, I can still guarantee you that this movie will be able to make you laugh with witty and comical lines throughout, ask to be passed a tissue during more sentimental scenes, and make you sit on the very edge of your seat at the climax of the action. It definitely knows how to grab and keep the attention of an entire theatre packed with young children, teenagers, and adults alike.

A film that highlights the great advances and prospects of today’s technology coupled with the rapid pace of an Marvel action movie and a valuable moral that keeps with the traditional character of Disney, Big Hero 6 is pretty much guaranteed to please just about anyone.

Just because it’s crunch time at school right now doesn’t mean you should depriving yourself of movies. In the midst of the wicked terrors of midterms and papers, Big Hero 6 is just the thing to save you from disintegrating into a bundle of stressed, frayed nerves. Get yourself a movie ticket today and treat yourself to a break and a good dose of warm fuzzies!
