5 Organizational Tools For Your Dorm Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Moving into a new space can prove to be both exciting and challenging. Luckily, there is no shortage of organizational inspiration on sites like Pinterest and Instagram. Across the globe people have figured out little tips to keep their bedrooms organized for their first year of university and beyond. These are just a few of the best tools that are aesthetically pleasing for instagram photos, super affordable and extremely useful.

1. TJENA Magazine File (IKEA, $4.99 for 2)

These nifty cardboard boxes are perfect space savers for the desk in your room. A great use for them is to hold notebooks for each class. You can label each box for each class that you have, and leave anything for that class in the box, until you need it for the next lecture you have to attend. The TJENA box is sturdy and can hold both notebooks and textbooks. They can sit wherever you want in your room, whether you have them sitting on the desk or on another organizational unit you bring for your dorm room.

2. TJENA Desk Organizer (IKEA, $4.99)

One of the best things to have is a desk organizer. A desk organizer can be used to sort pens from pencils, and can also be used to hold important papers.  This is the perfect place to put your schedule or the syllabus for each one of your classes. It can sit neatly on your desk and conveniently hold all your everyday essentials. They come in all sorts of colours, which means you’ll never be limited to black or white if you’re looking for something more fun to brighten up your dorm room.

3. RASKOG Utility Cart (IKEA, $39.99)

The newest Pinterest trend, the RASKOG Utility Cart, is the perfect organization unit on wheels. The cart can be used for millions of different things. In a small dorm room, it can be the cart of multiple jobs. It can be used as a night stand, a place to store your heavy textbooks, a place to put all your make up, a place to put all your bathroom supplies and so many more. With its bonus feature of wheels, this is the perfect unit to wheel to the bathroom when you’re getting ready to go out on the town.

4. UBrands MOD Frame 3 N 1 Calendar Board (Target, $18.50)

One of the most essential organizational tools that you can have is the calendar white board. It helps to keep you organized all the time. On the white board you can lay out when assignments and midterms begin as well as important social events. It helps to give you a visual of what will be going on each day for your school life, so that you can plan accordingly. Along with the corkboard, you can pin up important notes and dates so you never forget them. It can be propped up against the wall and the desk, or it can be hung up. I suggest using command hooks because they’re easy to peel off the wall later and leave no holes.

5. 2019 12-Month Large Flexi Planner Bare Tree (Indigo, $16.50)

If you’re not interested in getting a white board to use as a calendar, another way to stay on top of everything that will be happening in your first year of university is to use an agenda or a planner. Indigo sells a handful of practical, colourful and pretty planners to keep all of your appointments and due dates organized.

These five organizational tools can make your first year living in a dorm a little bit easier. With so much going on at university it is important to stay organized. All these items can help you do that plus they are aesthetically pleasing, which means all of the Snapchats you send of your new room will be the bomb! Plus, everything will be organized and that much easier to find when midterms roll around.
