Working Collegiettes™: How to Find a Great Job on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

While most undergrads enjoy lifestyles that have them spending more money than they’re making, savvy collegiettes™ know that it’s possible to balance schoolwork, an active social life, and a part-time campus job. Need some reassurance that it can be done, right here at Michigan? The ladies of Landmark, the latest luxury apartment building on campus, took some time out of their busy schedules to discuss their jobs and prove to their fellow collegiettes™ that not only is it possible to find a way to earn some extra cash during the school year, but it’s also possible to love the work you’re doing!

Meet the Ladies of Landmark

Kathryn Burt
Junior, Business Administration Major

Landmark Title: Leasing Professional

Q: For those who may not know about Landmark, can you tell us a little bit about the company and its goals?
A: Landmark is a brand new student housing community. Our goal is to not only provide students with a place to live on campus but a college experience! By having all your amenities under one roof, we are saving students time and money.

Q: What is your favorite part about working at Landmark?
A: I am proud of what we are selling and it’s great seeing the excitement on students’ faces when they sign. Our most common feedback is how blown away people are by how beautiful Landmark will be.  I’d say if you’re thinking about it even the littlest bit, start by checking out the website.

Lindsay Kramer
December 2011 Graduate, Communication Studies Major

Landmark Title: Marketing Coordinator

Q:How did you become involved in working with Landmark?
A:As a part-time student last semester, I saw a job posting for the Leasing Professional job, went in for an interview, and left the interview with an offer for the marketing coordinator position.

Q:What is your day-to-day activity like at Landmark?
A:I work to create marketing ideas that are appealing to students but also achieve our business objectives. Working in this position at Landmark has also allowed me to be really creative. For example, I was able to create the Landmark Residents Organization – a student group that will give both residents and non-residents the chance to be involved in making the Landmark community the best it can be.

Q:Anything else you want to add?
A:If any girls are looking for ways to get involved and hold a job on campus, Landmark is currently hiring for our Community Assistant position in the building next year. Community Assistants will live in the building and play a vital role of accomplishing the community mission of Landmark. For students who like to make a difference in others’ lives, the Community Assistant position is a great opportunity.

Tori Hardy
Sophomore, International Studies and Political Science Double Major

Landmark Title: Leasing Professional

Q:What does your job entail?
A:As a leasing agent, it is my job to facilitate potential residents with their housing search. This includes giving virtual tours at the office, promoting Landmark at various events, answering parents’ questions, walking them through the leasing process, and completing lease files.

Q:What is your favorite part of working at Landmark?
A:From the spectacular custom interior design, to walking through the virtual tour, explaining the many facets that make Landmark unique is my favorite part of the job. My hope is that after receiving a virtual tour, people that come into the office will share my enthusiasm when they envision themselves living at Landmark.

Q:How do you balance your schoolwork with having a job on campus?
A:Balance is definitely important when you are working at school. Being an officer in my sorority, working part-time, and double majoring requires efficient time allocation and a very organized schedule. It’s also really important to me that I include time for socializing with my friends. I make sure to plan my week in advance and create a schedule that will allow me to get everything accomplished.

Q: What advice do you have for students looking for a job on campus?
A: It is hard to find a job, let alone a job that you enjoy doing. Make sure that the job fits into your schedule well and that it isn’t something that you dread. Also, definitely utilize the student employment website–there are a lot of great jobs there!

Q: What is your favorite part of working at Landmark?
A: We care about interior design!  I’ve never heard of student housing that offers a customizable professional interior design package – but Landmark does!

Q: Anything else you want to add?
A: You’ve got to see our interior design packages.  Call the office and ask for Julie! 734-327-1300
