Sasha Altschuler ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Not everyone has the motivation and drive that sophomore Sasha Althschuler has displayed.  A San Diego Native, Sasha not only works tirelessly to pursue her academic goals of receiving a double major in Political Science and Psychology, but also has dedicated herself to making a difference in the Michigan community.  As a freshman, Sasha founded her own club, The Smile Bringer Singers, who fuse community service and the performing arts.  Sasha’s club has brought smiles and happiness to both the student performers and the audiences they visit.

HC: Who exactly are the Smile Bringer Singers?

SA: The Smile Bringer Singers is a group that mixes students’ passions for performing and community service. The group was designed to bring happiness and inspiration to those less fortunate than us. We perform at Nursing Homes, Retirement Homes, Children’s Hospitals, and Homeless Shelters, singing upbeat songs such as “Build Me Up Buttercup” and “I Want You Back.” This club is a unique blend of passion, fun, and giving back to the community.

HC: How did you get the idea to start the club, and what did you have to do to make this a reality?

SA: I have a passion for singing, dancing, and community service. I wanted to mix all of my passions together by creating an incredible group for students who love performance. I wanted to create a group that would give students the opportunity to pursue their passions while making a difference in the community.  I believe singing brings smiles, hope, and courage to those less fortunate.

HC: What has been your proudest/greatest moment as the president of the club?

SA: My proudest and greatest moment as president of the club was at our first Festifall in 2011. Many people stopped at our poster and expressed their interest and thoughts on how great the idea behind this club was. Furthermore, a member of the club today, Trevor, came to Festifall in the pouring rain saying “ I am so happy I found this club – I found it on Maize Pages, loved the idea, can’t wait to be a part of it, and only came to festifall to sign up for The Smile Bringer Singers.” Having support and commentary like this can make a huge difference!

HC: Why did you choose Michigan when looking at schools? And in particular, why did you join the MCSP?

SA: For me, Michigan was the perfect blend of ideal academics, strong sports and spirit, and great Midwestern people. I also wanted to experience the snow for my first time and to see what it was like to live in a different climate than I am used to. I joined MCSP because I thought it would be great to begin my career at the University of Michigan with a diverse group of students all dedicated to helping the community – one of my passions and life goals.

HC: Any advice for people who want to start their own clubs?

SA: If you have an idea, pursue it. Don’t let any obstacles scare you. Even though you may get discouraged, if you believe something will be great and beneficial to others, it probably will be. You never know how many people you can affect or how many smiles you can bring by just putting effort and dedication into your goals.
