Samantha Lyons: Extracurricular Extraordinaire

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Sammie is an undergraduate senior at the University of Michigan. She’s in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. In addition to being an amazing student, Sammie has been involved in countless organizations on campus including non-profits, club sports, and varsity sports. Her Campus had the opportunity to sit down with Sammie to discuss her impressive achievements!

Her Campus: What organizations and extracurricular activities were you involved with throughout your first three years at Michigan?

Sammie Lyons: During my freshman year, I was primarily involved in MRun, a club sports team on campus, a community service fraternity, and other organizations on campus. That following summer, I was a student orientation leader for the University. During my second year at Michigan, I participated in an Alternative Spring Break at an HIV-AIDS site in Texas, and I started a chapter of the worldwide organization called, “The World Needs More Love Letters,” at Michigan. In addition to all of that, I was a first year fellow for the Barger Leadership Institute, and I served on the club sports council. That spring I participated in LeaderShape, a completely funded one-week, leadership-building program, and I also served as a resident advisor for the spring and summer terms. I continued working for University of Michigan Housing during my junior year as a diversity peer educator. I was also the Development Chair for Dance Marathon and the Undergraduate Chair for the Student Campaign Committee.

HC: Wow, you’ve been busy! What are you currently involved with on campus?

SL: I’m currently on the Women’s Varsity Rowing team as a walk-on student-athlete, a research assistant in Dr. Eva Feldman’s neurology lab and, again, I’m the Undergraduate Chair for the Student Campaign Committee.

HC: You are a member of so many different, diverse activities. Why did you choose these specific activities for your senior year?

SL: I wanted to develop myself physically, intellectually and professionally in areas that I had not already participated in.

HC: That’s amazing! What are your plans for after graduation?

SL: I intend to obtain a master’s degree in Public Policy prior to receiving my M.D.

HC: Describe your Michigan experience in one word, and explain why you chose that word.

SL: Maverick. I chose this word because it means unorthodox or unconventional. I feel that my experiences at the University of Michigan have not been repetitive. Each organization and each space that I have been a part of has added to my learning.

HC: Finally, if you could give your freshman-self any advice, what would it be?

SL: You have the capacity to be the person you aspire to be. You just need to remember that you are worthy.

Casey is a freshman at the University of Michigan. If she's not studying or working for her clubs, you can usually find her trying new restaurants with her friends, running through the Arb, or lying in bed watching One Tree Hill for the 4th time.
