Perception vs. Reality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Most college students try to maintain a certain persona on social media accounts. Instagram is huge because it just focuses on posting pictures. Instagramming food, especially desserts like ice cream cones, donuts, macaroons, etc is very trendy right now. People spend time trying to photograph their cupcake at the perfect angle to ensure they will receive a sufficient amount of likes.

However, there is a double standard in place– Instagram these decadent desserts, but also maintain a thin and fit lifestyle. This trend is especially evident with popular bloggers. Most famous bloggers are thin women who constantly take pictures of all the food they eat.

As college students, this practice of staying fit while constantly eating decadent food is not a reality. Although some of us are blessed with a fast metabolism, college is usually the age when your metabolism starts to slow down. Therefore, college girls must start focusing on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, it is not realistic to cut out desserts altogether either. Creating a health balance is key when it comes to food in college.
