Meghan Maloney, ’15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

What store does every college girl love? Victoria’s Secret. What would be even better than shopping at Victoria’s secret? Being a Victoria’s Secret representative on your college campus. Sophomore, Meghan Maloney, is a member of the University of Michigan Victoria’s Secret street team and she gets to promote Victoria’s Secret on campus. She loves spreading the word about Victoria’s Secret and getting all of the perks that go along with being a member of the street team!

HC: Tell me about your position with Victoria’s Secret.
MM: Well, I got an e-mail from a sister in my sorority saying that she thinks it would be perfect for me to apply to the Victoria’s Secret street team. There are two seniors on campus that are the campus representatives for Victoria’s Secret, but the street team helps out with all of the events. We basically promote all of the awesome events on campus. We had a Victoria’s Secret PINK tailgate and I got to hand out the little toy dogs that would allow girls to get free t-shirts and cool stuff. As members of the street team, we basically post flyers and hype up the events on campus and assist the events if they need us to.

HC: How long have you been on the street team?
MM: I got selected to be on it in September for this school year. I’m pretty sure it lasts for the school year and then you can reapply. I’ve only been on it for a month but it’s been really cool so far.

HC: Have you met a lot of people during your experience?
MM: There are ten other girls on the street team. They range from freshmen to juniors. It’s cool because it’s a great way to get involved with Victoria’s Secret. I’ve met girls on the team ,and I met a lot of girls when I promoted the tailgate. I met a ton of girls that love Victoria’s Secret and some even said they are interested in being on the street team for next year.

HC: What are the perks of being on the street team?
MM: Well, for starters, we get a bunch of free stuff. We got mini dogs and t-shirts when we threw the PINK tailgate, which was awesome. We also get a ton of giveaways that they give us. We get lots of free stuff and we get to know about the events on campus. It’s really cool to represent the brand on campus and it’s a really good opportunity to put on your resume. Plus, if you wanted to work at the store you could always say you know about the brand and how to represent it.

HC: Do you guys have any other cool events coming up?
MM: They haven’t picked the dates yet, but I do know that we’re having a PINK football tailgate on an actual football Saturday. They’re trying to have it at one of the houses on the way to the stadium. I’m not positive as to what we’re doing yet – I think they’re going to have a bunch of free stuff though so it’ll be a ton of fun! Also, they’re having a bra party to show off the new campus push-up bra, which will be really cool, too!

HC: Has this opened up doors for you to do other campus rep stuff?
MM: Well, I’m really interested in fashion, and I saw another thing online about how Madewell was looking for college ambassadors. I’m really excited about that. They give you the freedom to create your own events on campus, which is really awesome. I’m going to the brand rep training sometime this month. I don’t know the exact details of my position but I do know that I get to promote my brand on campus and host events. I’m going to do either a fashion show or trunk show somewhere and have other events that they want me to hold.

HC: Would you recommend being a campus representative or ambassador to other girls?
MM: If you’re really interested in fashion and you’d like to go into the industry, it’s a great way to get your foot in the door by doing fashion-related events on campus. It looks great on your resume because you’re learning how to market a brand to people of your age, which is definitely difficult at such a huge school. Each market has different perks and it’s really interesting to learn how to manage your time with planning events. If you’re also interested in working with that company, it can help you get a job at a store at the mall because you can tell them you’re familiar with the brand and how to market it. I would definitely recommend it to girls that are interested. Planning events does take a lot of time, though, so you have to make sure you have the time in your schedule for it! If you do, it’s an amazing experience!
