Kylie’s Finds: Week 1

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

I think I can speak for the entire Her Campus UMich staff when I say that we’re very excited to see our branch of HC thriving!  Although the entire exec board, including myself, will be busy working to bring you more fabulous articles from your fellow Michigan colligiettes™, we’ll be blogging along the way, no matter how tired we may be!

Anyway, I’ve always been about dragging my attention away from the boring stuff I should be doing towards the pointless mush the gaping trenches of the internet has to offer.  Having said this, I figure you guys could benefit from a least ONE of my favorite internet treasures that I find every so often.  So, if you’re one of those people who panics at the thought of procrastination, this probably isn’t the place for you.

This week’s gem comes from The Oatmeal, an interesting website that features odd-humor quasi-comics that even I think are funny (and I really, really don’t like comics).  While some of their pieces are more ridiculous than others, I happen to find their grammar related comics to be both extremely funny and frightfully true.  In the case of “Ten Words You Need to Stop Misspelling,” (follow the link, trust me), The Oatmeal goes into painstaking detail and hilarity to make sure that all readers never make some of the most bothersome spelling errors known to man EVER again.  Similar pieces, such as “What it Means When You Say Literally” and “How to Use a Semicolon” also make me laugh to a point that I’m almost embarrassed to admit.  As a natural-born grammar snob, I find that The Oatmeal basically says what I wish I could say to the majority of the population, and I’m sure that those of you who enjoy a well written piece of anything anywhere near the amount I do will appreciate these comics.  For those of you who are not as caught up in the world of proper writing (hey, it’s not for all of us), there are plenty of other hilarious options, such as “10 Things You Need to Stop Tweeting About” and “Six Reasons to Ride a Polar Bear to Work.”  Enjoy wasting large quantities of time romping around the site… I apologize in advance for any homework that goes undone.

Nikki is a senior at the University of Michigan double majoring in English and Communication Studies.  In addition to Her Campus, Nikki is also involved in Ed2010, The Forum-Michigan's Greek Life Newspaper, Alpha Delta Pi, and Gamma Sigma Alpha.  In her spare time, she enjoys being outside, playing guitar, going on bike rides, and traveling.  Her guilty pleasures include celebrity gossip sites, Glee, and chocolate chip cookies.
