It’s Never Too Late To Decorate: Spring Up Your Drab Dorm!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

While the whether outside is still frightful…in March, why not spruce up your dorm room to ease any case of the wintry blues you might still be suffering from? Check out this list of simple ideas to help you make the inside of your room look like spring!

First, try this quick fix for the bland, white walls on all four sides of your dorm room. They might already be covered with posters from Glee, the beach, or Taylor Lautner (or maybe Robert Pattinson?), but it’s time for a change! Unfortunately, in Michigan, spring doesn’t actually bloom until April or May, so why not add your own blossoms right on your walls? Put up posters of flowers, butterflies, or anything that reminds you of springtime to add an instant pep to your room. Or, if you want to go further and try a trendsetting new dorm-room design, add some 3-D flowers! Check out the Umbra Wall Flowers at bedbathandbeyond.com.

Next, try some new lighting. While you might be getting along just fine with the provided fluorescent lighting of Markley, adding a cute Chinese-inspired lantern will add both color and pizzazz to your dorm room. Pick a spring color like green or pink for an instant uplift! Hang it from a lofted bed or attach it to the ceiling for a fresh new look.

If you’re not looking to add anything significant to your dorm room, try one of my favorite sprucing tricks: new bed sheets! While entirely new bedding can cost a little too much, a new set of sheets can be the perfect treat. Choose something in a coordinating pattern (or go totally different if you want!) and whenever you snuggle up in bed, you’ll be reminded of your subtle change-up.

Another easy and simple idea is cleaning. While I might sound like your mother reminding you to clean your room, a sweep through can be the simplest and most effective way to improve your space, and maybe even your mood (or your roommate’s mood for finally cleaning the room after all this time). Cleaning and reorganizing your room can not only lead you to view your room in a new light, but also give you a chance to send home things you don’t need (you might even find yourself asking, “why did I even bring this in the first place?”).  A new room layout might be just the thing you and your roommate need after surviving this much of the school year.

While you wait out the long, Michigan winter, try out one (or all!) of these tricks to make your dorm room more appealing than the view outside!
