How You Know He’s a Keeper

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Let’s face it, we’re girls. When that boy is eyeing us, we’re thinking of ways to snatch him up. When he’s not, we’re scheming up a plan to make him eye us.

But what people fail to acknowledge is this: What if you have a boy and don’t know whether or not he’s the one?

Here are some signs that point to your boyfriend being a keeper:

1. He calls you out (in a positive way.)

You and your man are studying at his place when he asks you what you want to eat. You tell him you don’t care, so he offers to make you a cheeseburger. He then goes, “Before you say okay, read the nutrition facts. I don’t want you to be upset with yourself for the rest of the day if you aren’t happy with the amount of calories you’re eating. I can make something healthier if you want.” He knows how conscious you are about what you eat and he wants you to be happy with your decisions, so he stops you from succumbing to your weaknesses by giving you another option.

2. He admits when he’s wrong.

Nobody’s perfect. Your boyfriend upsets you, and you explain to him what you feel he did wrong. Instead of pursuing an argument, he says, “I’m sorry. You’re totally right. I don’t know what got into me.” That’s a keeper: someone who will admit to being wrong and show an effort to change whatever he does that upsets you.

3. He wants to hear what you have to say.

Your guy finds out news that really excites him, and you aren’t sure how you feel about it yet. He can tell that you’re not stoked, so he says, “Please don’t just pretend to be happy. I want to know your feelings, too!” He’s serious about knowing how you feel and making sure he hears any concerns you may have.

4. He is willing to embarrass himself around you.

This one will take a little while, but once you’ve been involved for a few months, it’s crucial. You and your boy are holding hands while walking and he slips, falls, and brings you down with him. Instead of blushing, the two of you laugh for ten minutes on the ground. If that’s the case, he’s totally worth it.

5. He compliments you on the right things.

Don’t get me wrong; it’s great to hear that you’re perfect, amazing, and awesome all the time. But, the way you know a guy is a real keeper? He compliments you on the truth. If your strengths are that you’re personable, a quick learner, and generous, and your boyfriend says to you, “I have so much faith that you’ll nail that interview. You’re the friendliest person I know.” That’s how you know he’s right for you. He tells it like it is.

Obviously, there are many other great qualities that can show that your guy is the one; these are just what I’ve noticed from my experience! Good luck on the boy hunt!
