As a self proclaimed master of Netflix, I could recommend a thousand shows to watch during quarantine. However, none of them would compare to Schitt’s Creek. Picked up by the lower scale channel Pop TV, this show turned into a complete phenomenon in a short amount of time. For those of you who have not hopped on the bandwagon, I promise it’s completely worth it. This program has everything a show should have. It has humor, style, emotion, diversity, relatability, and so much more. The character development is so deep that it’s almost impossible not to get attached to the characters. Dan and Eugene Levy, a father-son duo, created the show together. They spent months creating characters and defining them before they went about the casting process. They knew exactly what they needed out of the actors and they did not settle. I immediately fell in love with the characters and I think they’re what make the show so successful.

Every single episode of the six season show made me laugh so hard until I was in tears. The show revolves around the Rose family, who lost all of their wealth and were forced to move to a small town that they bought as a joke. They went from living in a huge mansion and throwing extravagant parties to living in a run down motel with people they felt they didn’t identify with. They had to start all over and all they had was each other. While this might seem like an unrealistic concept, each character has something identifiable and relatable about them. Even Moira Rose, one of the most dramatic, outrageous, and amazing characters I have ever seen, has moments of humility and pride in her family. The show explores the idea that, though it may seem like we live in a different world than people of other socioeconomic classes, we’re more similar than we think. Throughout the seasons the show becomes less about obtaining wealth and more about family and love. Schitt’s Creek is also very diverse and promotes acceptance of all types of people. The shows main character, David Rose, is a pansexual man. Instead of being preachy, the show portrays a life where all people are accepted, and what it could be like. More importantly, the cast is just as accepting, or even more accepting as the characters they portray.

I find myself attracted to shows that are about something bigger than just making money and getting viewers. Schitt’s Creek is a great example of what television is able to do for people all over the world. The show portrays love, struggle, and complete acceptance in a beautiful way. While I come from a very accepting home, many people don’t, and the writers and creators of Schitt’s Creek were able to use their platform to encourage a more accepting world. Schitt’s Creek has had a global impact and I think everyone should give the show a chance. It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry, and once you start it, you’ll immediately want to binge-watch the entire show. It’s definitely one of the series that I’ll be rewatching on Netflix over, and over, and over again.
