What I am Most Excited About for My Study Abroad Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

A few weeks ago, I was accepted into the UMass Oxford Summer Seminar for Summer 2022! I land at Heathrow Airport on July 1st and return on August 20th, and I am beyond excited to be spending 7 weeks of my summer studying in the amazing city of Oxford and having a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Although I am nervous about being so far away from home, there is so much more I am looking forward to that makes my nerves seem meaningless.

New friends!

I have made the most incredible friendships at UMass. I seriously think all the time just how lucky I am to have made the lifelong friendships I have, but I also cannot wait to widen my circle of friends with all of the new people I meet. I imagine it’ll be similar to the freshman year experience where everyone is so eager to meet people and make friends, except this time we’ll be doing so in the U.K.!

Getting out of Massachusetts

I love Massachusetts. I love the people here, and I will miss my home so much, but after over two years in the pandemic and never leaving, I am ready to see the world again. I think it’ll be a super refreshing experience and allow me to make up for the lost time during the pandemic.

growing as a person

Again, I am really nervous to go, and I know that as my departure approaches, that anxiety will grow. But, I’m excited to prove to myself that I am capable of doing really scary things and growing from those experiences.

missing Amherst

Senior year is going to bring a lot of emotions. It makes me sad to even think about only having one more year living with some of my favorite people in the world. But Amherst is not perfect, it has its faults for sure. I think spending two months in a new environment will make me long for the bars on N. Pleasant and DuBois library and make my senior year even more special. I love UMass, and I cannot wait to miss it.

The memories I will make

The memories I have made during the last three years of college have been some of the best of my entire life. It makes me so excited to think about the memories and experiences I will have in my seven weeks at Oxford. I can’t stop watching videos of other students’ experiences at Oxford, it just fuels my excitement and eagerness.

I would be lying if I didn’t say I have a countdown going on my phone to July 1st. I really can’t express enough just how excited I am for this opportunity. I spend too much time daydreaming about all the experiences I will have in Oxford, despite also being extremely, extremely nervous and anxious about it. I know that it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will be so grateful I did.
