We Wonder: Is Age Just a Number?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

When away at college, you are constantly surrounded by people, particularly guys of all ages. It is very likely at a time like this, that you will fall for someone who isn’t your age.

I wonder…is age just a number?

It always helps to look at the pros and cons. Yes, there are certain things that girls look for in all guys, but I believe there truly is a difference that comes with age.

Speaking from personal experience (don’t judge me!), I have been with both younger and older guys. Depending on the circumstances either one could make for a lasting relationship. The key is taking their age into consideration while dating them. Now, don’t get me wrong, when I say a younger guy there has to be some sort of limit. When in college, maybe one or two years at most are enough. If you like control then dating a younger guy will probably work for you. If you hit it off with a guy and they happen to be younger, most of the time they will find it intriguing if they can say, “I’m hooking up with this older girl.”

But here are the facts, most of the time they are immature. There are things they won’t necessarily be able to handle. They might not trust you as easily because they have less experience. They tend to be “clingy” probably because they haven’t had as many relationships. But hey, if it works for you, why not!

Now I know girls love the idea of dating that “older guy.” There is just something that makes it more interesting. But you have to take a few things into consideration. They have had girlfriends before you! Don’t be the jealous type (I’ve learned that the hard way). But older guys definitely know how to treat a girl right; they’ll know where to take you out and how to make you happy. If you find yourself involved with an older guy, understand that they most likely know how to be in a relationship, have faith in them!

Whatever you decide, be yourself and the right guy will fall in your lap.
