As our semester comes to an end, it is time to look forward to the summer opportunities we have been waiting for. It’s the time to find a new summer mantra, a new summer mentality, and of course some new summer accessories. About 20 minutes from the most eastern coastal town in Massachusetts, there’s a small suburb called Manchester-By-The-Sea, not to be confused with Manchester, New Hampshire, where a new small business has emerged for all your summer needs. The new brand Low Tide Society sells everything from towels, to bucket hats, to adorable summer-themed tumblers and Koozies, and not only does their merchandise make you look like you’re ready to kick it beach style, but you also feel that summery liberation you craved so desperately in April.

The name of the brand tells a story itself, with their slogan reading “Low Tide Society, Going Nowhere Fast,” which is referencing the rules of boating where it is not encouraged to ride fast when the tide is low as you could hit rocks in shallow water. This summer philosophy perfectly summarizes the character of the creator behind Low Tide Society, Ava Glass (she/her). Ava is going to be starting her senior year at Montana State University next fall to continue her education in film production, but for the next three months, her eyes are on the prize, the prize being the Blue Atlantic. Ava has been capturing the Nowhere Fast lifestyle on film for years now in a series she calls “Summer-By-The-Sea,” and she has found a way to intertwine her passion for filmmaking with her goal of providing a summer sensation for the members of the Low Tide Society by using her videography skills to market her product perfectly to her target demographic.

When HC was able to snag an interview with business creator Ava Glass, I was interested to learn more about the graphic design of a squid that has become the logo for Low Tide Society. The Squid has been in the Glass family for years now; it’s sort of like their own little family crest, and its flag waves proudly on the water at their rafted moring in Sand Dollar Cove, MBTS. “Yeah, I don’t know it just felt right using that as the logo since it’s pretty much already everywhere in my house,” Ava tells HC.
