Need Cash? 4 Hot Jobs On Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Whether you’ve been breaking the bank ordering take-out, getting your daily Starbucks fix, going to the bars, or replenishing your wardrobe, the $ all adds up!  What better way is there to earn some quick cash than finding an on-campus job (it’s a great way to meet more people, too!)? Here are 4 of some of the best jobs to have on campus:

1. The Procrastination Station

Can’t get enough caffeine?  Do you have an unhealthy obsession with coffee?  Look no further: The Procrastination Station is the perfect workplace for you.  Learn how to make a variety of different coffee drinks and sandwiches. Employee, Teresa Terracina, a Sophomore at UMass, says, “I think it’s so much fun making different kinds of coffee.  Before, I didn’t even know what an Americano or a Macchiato was.”  Teresa says, “The people I work with are super friendly and easy to talk to and my supervisor allows us to take breaks on our shifts and lets us make ourselves a meal (which is great, because we have awesome mac’n’cheese!)  The smell of coffee and chai is totally a plus, too!”

2. OIT (Office of Information Technologies)

Are you tech-savvy?  Looking to use your incredibly handy skills to calm down both students and faculty who just can’t seem to fix their computers or projectors?  UMass has the perfect job for you: working at OIT Computer Classrooms. Katie MacLeod, a Junior at UMass, loves working at OIT. Katie helps students and professors with troubleshooting issues in the Learning Commons of the library and in classrooms around the UMass campus. She says, “My job is really great.  I get to meet a lot of different people on campus and I also get to sit in on some interesting classes, which is awesome! I help students and professors with printing, logging in, scanning, using projectors, and any other questions they have, and I have plenty of time to do homework.”

3. The Center For Women and Community

Are you interested in women’s studies, social work, or social problems?  The Center For Women and Community could be the place for you!  This center devotes itself to providing education, leadership opportunities, advocacy, and support services for women.  Now offering work-study jobs, non-work-study jobs, volunteer positions, and internships, there are so many ways to get involved with The Center For Women and Community. Once hired, employees at the CWC participate in a semester-long training and then begin to apply their training to their work the following semester. Lisa Pinatti, a Sophomore at UMass, was just recently hired. She says, “I’m just training right now so I don’t get to do much work, but next semester I’ll be running workshops for students on sexual violence, gender, and healthy relationships!”  Working at the CWC is a great way to take on a larger leadership role and to become a role model for others.

4.  TA (Teaching Assistant)

Looking for a way to get more class credits without having to take another boring gen-ed? UMass has the perfect solution: TA. Being a teacher’s assistant in a class or subject area of interest to you could be one of the best jobs you’ve ever had.  Brenna Pevato, a senior at UMass, is an Undergraduate TA for Public Health 160.  After taking this class as a student, Brenna decided she wanted to teach what she had learned in the class to other students.  She says, “The topics for discussion range from tobacco use, alcohol use/abuse, sexual health, physical exercise to the environment. I personally love being a TA because as a Public Health major, I get to teach undergraduate students about topics that I am engaged and interested in, such as sexual health and substance abuse. I hope to one day be a health educator and being a TA gives me great practice and insight into that field. I also love being a TA because I strongly believe in Health Education and Promotion and think that students at UMass should know how to properly take care of their bodies, as well as know the consequences that come with poor care.”

Whether you are shy or outgoing, a computer geek or a social advocate, there is literally something for everyone. These are only a few of the many jobs UMass has to offer. Check out the Student Job Listings page on the UMass website for more information!
