Mascara Recommendations and Tips From Someone with Straight Lashes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Do you struggle with stubborn lashes? When I scroll on social media it sometimes feels like every girl is born with perfectly long, curled eyelashes. So, when people share their lash routine, it usually does me no good because my lashes are usually much different from theirs. However, over the years I have learned some hacks and found products to allow my lashes to meet their full potential!

The most important tip I can provide you on your straight-to-curled lash journey is the form in which you curl your lashes. This process is one of the biggest determinants of the outcome. One common mistake I used to make was concentrating my curl on one spot of my lashes. The issue with doing this is that it leads to a very unnatural-looking curl. You are left with more of a letter L shape. Instead, you should gradually make your way up from the base of your lashes to the ends. Starting at your lash line, curl the lashes with a few pumps and keep moving upwards along the lashes until you reach the tips. This will allow for a more curved, natural-looking curl.

Now that you have the curl down, you are going to need the right mascaras to hold it! No matter how nice your curl looks, it all comes down to whether you choose the right mascara. The biggest thing you want to focus on is finding a formula that will hold your lashes in place instead of falling back straight. Here are a few recommendations I stand by after years of experimenting.

L’Oréal Voluminous Original Waterproof Mascara: This one is my holy grail. I recommend it to everyone I know. As someone who deals with my lashes never holding a curl, this mascara is the most reliable in keeping my lashes’ shape. It gives the lashes a beautiful, natural look while never causing them to fall.

Super Lash Mascara by Apple Cosmetics: This one was a TikTok find and when I tried it out I was pleasantly surprised. It looks similar to the L’Oréal Voluminous one but is just a few dollars cheaper. It did not hold the curl as well but if your lashes are bit less stubborn than mine, it is perfect for you.

Now that you have your products, there a few more tips that you can use to improve your look.

One important tip is to not pack on the mascara! I know, you want big, bold lashes, but the more product you apply, the heavier your lashes become resulting in them falling. Doing two coats has allowed me to find a perfect balance.

This other useful tip is for anyone else who has black lashes with blonde tips. I have found it to be a quick easy hack when I want some length or just minimal makeup to apply mascara only to the ends of your lashes. The blonde part is too light to be seen well which makes your lashes look shorter, but if you apply a bit to the ends you will be able to see their true length.

The last tip is to always buy waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascara tends to be dryer than the original formula ones. This creates less weight on your lashes which, again, keeps them from falling.

All of these products and hacks have allowed me to make my straight, short, blonde eyelashes into something much more! Hopefully, they strengthen your lash game too!
