Long Distance: How Often is Too Often for Him to Visit?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

If you’re dealing with a “long-distance” relationship, we all know that how often you see your guy matters more than anything! Being in college, a lot of us have boyfriends from home, at other schools… the list goes on – so how do we decide how often to see one another? Well, here’s a few ways to think about your relationship and how to decide how often is TOO often, and how to make it work.

First, it all depends on the DISTANCE between one another. How far away are you?

A.) If you’re far away in another state, or even in the same state just several hours away from one another – the best way to handle this while keeping your pockets in tact, is to see one another when there are breaks from school. Don’t get me wrong; you deserve to see each other during the months that don’t technically have breaks too. In that circumstance, plan weekend getaways to each other’s respective school per semester! That way you’re both making the effort and not letting breaks be the only way you see his face.

B.) If you or your guy can get to one another in a matter of minutes or few hours – take advantage of that as much as you want to. This is where personal regulation comes into play! For example, if seeing him isn’t as much of as a hassle as it is above then spend a significant amount of time with each other. However, spending too much time can be responsible for making you lose the experience you’re supposed to be getting at school. Limit yourself to weekend visits, this could be every weekend or every other. Doing this gives you both something to look forward to once that week of classes (or work) is over, while keeping the physical aspect of your relationship in consideration.

Second, you need to remember that you’re in college for a REASON.

A.) Trying not to let the stress of missing your guy affect your grades or activities is hard – this is why seeing him does matter. If you go too long without seeing him, you can go a little bit crazy and it will show! Your academic standing could be in jeopardy and so can your social life. One way to be sure this doesn’t happen is to talk as often as possible! Send him cute and funny messages that will make his day, and he’ll definitely do the same. Knowing that your guy is there for you makes you feel so much better – and brings this emotional stress down a notch.

B.) Don’t think that because you are so close, you’re not supposed to have alone time. If you focus too much of your time on your relationship, you are also risking your academic standing as well as personal growth. Doing this can make you feel like you aren’t getting the “college experience” that you yearn for. Being close is great and it should definitely be cherished! Use this closeness as an opportunity to spend time together while you both grow individually.

Lastly, that quote that our mothers told us about is true: Distance DOES make the heart grow fonder.

With that being said, appreciate your distance or start creating the feeling of one. But make sure you do pay attention to your relationship and your guy.  Always take time to enjoy your experience and have fun! Just be sure to leave room in your schedule for him too. Facetime, Skype, etc. should or will become one of the main means of communication for you two. Texting and talking on the phone are both great, but seeing faces and those expressions that you miss the most can help make you feel like you aren’t that far away. This way, when summer starts again – it’s like you never spent one moment away from each other!

P.S.: These tips are to be used in a way that is suitable for your specific relationship! Going away to school, regardless of how far away it actually is, means a lot for a collegiette. College gives you a sense of independence and freedom that you wouldn’t necessarily get anywhere else – so don’t allow your relationship to hinder that. If anything, it should help it! Good luck!
