Designers Under the Microscope: The Looks We Loved at NYFW

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Fashion week has come and gone, and all fashion-savvy Collegiettes cannot wait until the spring season is upon them to mimic these talented designers. But, can you really wait another six months to wear these gorgeous trends? No need, ladies! Take a look and see how you can incorporate NYFW’s looks in your fall and winter Collegiette wardrobe.

Designer: Bagdley Mischka

The Bagdley Mischka show, presenting the designer’s Spring/Summer 2015 line, featured so many designs that we have seen before. Think pleated maxi skirts and bold crop tops, paired with metallic belts and short jackets. Mischka also featured pleated A-line skirts and expanded in a variety of fabrics. Many shorts and skirts were scalloped, layered with tulle and ruffles, and even had intricate sewn beading designs. The most dominant theme in this show was the use of metallics and sheer fabric

One way to incorporate Bagdley Mischka in your Collegiette wardrobe is to combine bold cut tops paired with textured bottoms. Scalloped skirts can be worn at any time of the day, especially when paired with print knits in pastel colors, like violet and light blue. Shoulder pads and collared shirts are making a come-back, and would be a great way to add some class to a dressy blazer. This look is perfect for job interviews or internships. A-line skirts in sheer and layered metallics can be found at reasonably priced stores and can be worn to class or even on a date night. Remember Collegiettes, no one shines more than a girl wearing metallics!

Designer: Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera tops last year’s show by incorporating bold colored prints, bright hues, with solid and geometrically cut outfits. Something seen across many brands, but perfected by Herrera, were matching tops and bottoms, as seen in the image below. Another trend that seemed to be flaunted in this show was the presence of chunky and oversized coats, topped with intricate collars and high necklines

Let Carolina Herrera inspire you: choose dark and large floral prints and pair them with with bright colored heavy coats or oversized, collared sweaters. Emphasize your flirty side with a matched print outfit, suitable for class and for going out. Shirt dresses, in both plain and tribal prints, were very well worn last season, and are staying in style. And, don’t forget, even though fall and winter are coming, you can always wear bold colors mixed with your classic winter clothes. Wearing Carolina Herrera’s choice of bold color, you’ll be the center of attention wherever you go!

Designer: Monique L’Huillier

No one does elegant flow like designer Monique L’Huillier. Something to take note of in this fashion show is the presence of wide set clothing. Whether it be wide leg pants, wide sleeves on cropped and long jackets, or wide-fit tops, “wide” is very in right now. The designer incorporates thin shiny belts with bold metal clasps to create a more form-fitting image with the wide clothing. The fabrics used in this line were sheer metallics combined with sparkles and beaded hems. Floral remains in fashion, and L’Huillier goes above and beyond by making her florals three-dimensional

Bustiers and A-line skirts are a more relatable trend that emerges from this spectacular line. Incorporate this classy look into your wardrobe with a few statement pieces. You can opt for light pastel colored pants and pair them with black sheer tops or cardigans with large knots – the larger the better! Another way to show off your style is to choose for a much more girly look. Wear a high waisted A-line skirt with a bustier to flatter your curves, and you’ll be a sight for sore eyes.

Designer: Nanette Lepore

Nanette Lepore brings back formal wear and makes everyone more excited to dress for work. Pant suits have made their come-back and now they come in a variety of different styles. You can see them in silk, a variety of prints, and more importantly, with shorts. Now you can dress to impress professionally while maintaining your feminine look. Lepore shows her love for plunging necklines and revealing backs, while emphasizing wondrous body image with bikini briefs and oversized beach cover ups. Everything in Lepore’s line is done in silk, with outrageously bold prints, and combinations of florals and stripes. Bold and eye-catching is what this clothing line is demonstrating, something that can also be seen through the big pockets and big buttons present on the majority of the line.

Check out Lepore’s designs when dressing for internships and job interviews. Flaunt your feminine side while making sure that people take you seriously. Don’t be discouraged by the bold prints, embrace them! Combine a top in an intricate design with a pair of simple dress pants, and you’re ready to go. And, don’t forget, that after work comes pleasure. Nanette Lepore’s line of beach wear ensures that wherever you go, pleasure follows. Beautiful bikinis and swimwear, combined with tunics inspired from Ancient Greece and Tunisia will just ensure you have a great time. Tunics will never go old and you’ll be glad to own a piece that can be dressed up and down for any occasion. Nobody said you had to splurge on your entire wardrobe, but this is a piece worth doing so.
