Campus Celebrity: Allison Dancewicz (Homecoming Queen Nominee 2013)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Meet Allison Dancewicz, a nominee for 2013 Homecoming Queen! Prepare to vote for your King and Queen starting October 15th.

Alexa: What are you involved in at UMass?

Allison: Here at UMass I am involved in as many things as my schedule will allow. I am an Honors College student pursuing a double major in Dance and Management, so I try to split my time focusing on extracurricular activities from each area. I am on the Student Advisory Board for the Dance Department, in Alive with Dance, and Emerging Choreographer Series and I participate annually in the American College Dance Festival as well as the University Dancers Concert and Tour. For the Business side I am a part of Women in Business, Lead UMass, and I was recently asked to be co-founder/co-president of a management club for Isenberg! And for the Honors College stuff I am part of House Council’s Programming board for the Birch/Maple Cluster, Alpha Lambda Delta, and I was an Honors Orientation Leader in 2012.

Alexa: Why do you think you would be a good representative of UMass?

Allison: I would be a good representative of UMass because I am very involved on campus. I came to UMass because I love how big the school is and how much it has to offer. I am actively seeking new friendships and experiences every day along with exceeding expectations in my classes. I am a true UMass fan and believe that it is capable of great things. I would be honored to represent such a prestigious university.

Alexa: What is your favorite UMass memory?

Allison: My favorite UMass memory so far is dancing on the Fine Arts Center stage. I am part of the Multibands Concert which is a culmination of the entire musical, vocal, and dance groups in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Each year I get to meet new people and see all the talent that is being created on campus. Also the Fine Arts Center’s backstage is something that not everyone gets to see in their time here at UMass. It is a fantastic maze and with all of the incredible acts UMass brings through there it is cool to know I could be sitting in the same chair as one of the famous performers that has performed there!

Alexa: What’s your favorite spot at UMass?

Allison: My favorite spot at UMass is Durfee Conservatory. It is truly a hidden gem. It is always warm and the feeling of life around you as you sit on a bench next to all of these unique plants is calming and refreshing in the midst of a demanding schedule or workload.

Alexa: What is the most useful thing you have learned at UMass (in or outside of the classroom)?

Allison: The most useful thing I’ve earned at UMass is that everyone is different. When we were in high school we grew up with people from the same area as us and we got to know them for a long period of time. When I came to UMass I met so many different people who had really interesting lives even if they weren’t the same as mine. This is a lesson that we will face throughout our whole lives and the people will only become more vastly different than what we are “used to.” It is useful to learn to listen to other people’s stories and accept that there are different ways to do things.

Alexa: What is your favorite activity during UMass Homecoming week and why?

Allison: My favorite activity during homecoming week is the hockey game! Last year I was at the game where they announced the homecoming court and I knew since then that I wanted to be on it. I think going on the ice will be such a cool experience. A lot of UMass students go to the hockey games and it makes you feel like you are part of something so much bigger when you do the chants together.

Alexa: If you were to be crowned UMass Homecoming Queen 2013 what would your reaction be?

Allison: I would have a slight moment of “OMG is this real?” which would immediately follow with me smiling from ear to ear and maybe past that. Being Homecoming Queen 2013 would be a dream come true.

Alexa: If you could give one piece of advice to UMass underclassmen that are aspiring kings and queens, what would it be?

Allison: Live life to the fullest while you are here, meet new people and learn new things.  Be fearless and open to everything. Live in the moment, because these moments only last four short years!
