Bra, or Nah?: The Dos and Don’ts of Undergarments

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

With spring (sort of) here, and the anticipation of summer, girls’ clothes simply get thinner and smaller.

And with the sudden change of wardrobe, it is often hard to decide what is proper to wear under those clothes. With the addition of tank tops and shorts, some changes are simply necessary.

Here are a few Dos and Don’ts that girls should consider before heading out in the warm weather:

1. Strapless tops are great; they keep you cool on those boiling summer days. But what isn’t great is when bra straps are blatantly obvious. The view of bra straps detracts from the outfit, and can sometimes make the outfit look messy. So the next time you wear a strapless shirt, consider a strapless bra to match. I know strapless bras are a pain in the butt, but let’s be honest, they’re a necessary evil.

2. When spring comes, those who are brave enough take on wearing white bottoms. The problem with white pants and shorts is that sometimes you don’t know that they’re see-through until it’s too late. So play it safe ladies! Choose neutral or minimal-patterned undies at least the first few times you step out in them. Or better yet, go for wearing a thong instead. Either way you are saving yourself the pain of having the boy walking behind you knowing that your underwear has pretty little flowers all over them.

3. One of the biggest trends now is see-through shirts, usually made of lace or some kind of thin material. I know that a lot of girls simply wear bras under these shirts and sometimes that leaves little to be desired. For the same eye-grabbing effect try replacing your bra with a cute bandeau.

4. As it gets warmer, and the backs of shirts get lower, there is always the question of “bra, or nah?” This last topic is always a little tricky because there are so many different bust sizes. I have generally found that girls with smaller busts can more easily pull off the whole no-bra thing, and they should! But in the case that you are bustier, don’t be afraid to go braless! Go and pick yourself up some ‘sticky boobs’ and rock that scandalous top. Don’t let your rack hold you back!

No matter what rules you abide by this summer, make sure you feel confident and beautiful in whatever you wear!

Happy Summer, Collegiettes! XOXO.
