Bones or No Bones: How Noodle the Pug Controls My Daily Expectations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

It’s almost impossible not to walk around a college campus or scroll through your TikTok feed without hearing or seeing the phrase, “Is it a Bones Day?” Just in case you’re confused, or haven’t been on TikTok in a while, this is referring to the thirteen-year-old pug named Noodle and his ability to hold himself up when his owner Jonathan Graziano wakes him up each morning. If it’s a “bones” day, Noodle is able to sit upright, but if it is a “no bones” day, he will flop back down into bed.

You’re probably now thinking, okay, so what? Well, a “bones day” indicates that it’s a day to treat yourself. Start a new project, go buy that new curling iron that’s been on your wishlist, and so on. A bones day basically means it will overall be a good day, so it’s worth it to put a little extra time or effort into something you wouldn’t normally do or try. My favorite things to do on bones days include going a little harder at the gym, studying a little longer, and maybe talking to the boy I think is cute in my class.

A “no bones” day is not inherently bad, but it is meant to say that you need to take the day for yourself and maybe not rush into anything new or unusual. Treat yourself, but in a more relaxing way. Put on those sweatpants and just take it easy for the day. You deserve to unwind and reward yourself for all the hard work you do!

This phenomenon has personally affected me to the point where my daily morning routine includes checking TikTok first thing in the morning in order to see what kind of day I will be having today. I enjoy astrology, but sometimes it gets a little too complex for me, and Noodle’s methodology is simple. A bones day means I go to class, finish my work for the day, and maybe spend a little extra on guac at Chipotle. A no bones day means sweats, Netflix, and potential therapy drives with Taylor Swift blaring.

I have to say, the readings have been pretty accurate thus far. I don’t know what kind of superpowers Noodle has obtained throughout his thirteen years of life, but I’m very glad he chose to share them with us. On my bones days, I have been very productive and much has worked out for me. However, on a no bones day I have taken it easy and while I do complete what I need to do, I make sure to provide time for myself and not push myself too hard.

While I probably shouldn’t let the abilities of a pug to stand up totally influence my day, it is something fun to check up on, and it can give me confidence in my daily choices that I might not have otherwise. It’s almost a subconscious thing that may seem silly, but in all honesty, it’s been working for me. I treat my days with care and allow myself on bones days to be bold in my choices, and I take care of myself first on no bones days.

Noodle has definitely influenced many others in the same way. Of course, I will always put myself and my needs first before attempting anything I’m unsure about, but it’s still a fun little game to play throughout the day. As long as Noodle is around, I’ll greatly appreciate my daily readings.
