American Royalty: The Power Couples of America

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

This is America, and nobody tells America what to do. England can keep her Prince William and Kate Middleton. If we wanted to be assigned our royalty, we would move back to the UK. Over here in the land of the free, we may not have a royal couple to obsess over, but we have something better: rappers, actors, and supermodels. Who is America’s unofficial king and queen? The power couples over here are the individuals whose baby photos we await, weddings we anticipate, outfits we analyze, and lives we critique up and down. America is a free country, and that means free to choose our own royalty. Here’s a few of our top picks:

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Possibly the power couple in America right now; Queen B and HOV have the music industry, if not the entire country, if not the entire planet, eating out of the palm of their hands. When a legendary rapper and gorgeous, talented songstress join forces like this, it is almost impossible for all of us not to marvel. Their skills are indisputable, Blue Ivy is a cherub.

And their relationship is a match made in musical heaven. And when they’re together on stage…

Whether they are blowing up the stage at the Grammy’s, or dropping secret albums, we can’t wait to see what they pull next. And it seems like they’re as in love now as they were when they first met.

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady

He’s arguably the greatest QB in the NFL and she’s a Brazilian Victoria’s Secret Angel; the cliché would almost warrant an eye-roll, but football players and supermodels are possibly the closest thing America has to royals and these two seem so perfect for each other that we’ll let it slide.

The couple met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend back in 2006 and now have a son and daughter. Just imagine how genetically perfect those kids are with their parents’ ridiculous gene pool.

Also, fun fact: you probably thought that Tom was the breadwinner of the family, but Gisele is actually worth over twice as much as he is: $120 Million to her $290 MillionGIRL POWER. How else would they be able to afford their incredible mansion?

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Whether you love to hate them, hate to love them, or wish everyone would just shut up about them already, Kimye is inescapable.

Kanye West is of course a rapper, and a pretty good one at that, but lately he’s been getting a lot of hype for not just his music but also his cocky, overconfident ego, and his rather narcissistic comments and actions.

Kim Kardashian is his reality star/socialite/sex-tape-creator (what exactly is she?) fiancé, with a whole family of Kardashians along for the ride to fame. Together, these two are America’s newest media sensation; the birth of little baby North West saw to that!

What’s next for this power-couple? The two plan on getting married this summer in France and in true Kardashian fashion, the wedding will of course be televised. Also, another fun fact: did you know this will be Kim’s third marriage? Let’s hope this one lasts long than 72 days.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Brangelina have been in the spotlight for almost ten years now. The iconic celebrity couple made a splash in 2005 when Brad split from his then-wife Jennifer Aniston, presumably to be with Angie, his co-star in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (remember Team Aniston/Team Jolie?)

The couple is best know for being extremely good actors, extremely good-looking, and having tons of children (three biological and three adopted).

Every paparazzo’s dream, Brangelina has become a pop culture legend. As advocates for gay rights and same sex marriage, the two have publicly stated they will not be married until everyone in this country can be as well. However, technically speaking the couple has been engaged since 2012.

Michelle and Barack Obama

The Presidential family could be considered our Royal family, no? Regardless of what you think of Obama as a politician, most of America can agree that this presidential family is one of the most widely embraced since the Kennedy’s.

The couple has two adorable dogs and two daughters that act exactly like you would assume two teenage girls would, even if they did grow up in the White House. Example: Sasha and Malia taking selfies at Dad’s inauguration.

Politics aside, even with the scrutiny that comes with the job, the Obamas seem to know how to have good time.

Also, another fun fact, Michelle Obama made Maxim 2009 Hot 100 list. Surprised or not, she’s the first First Lady to receive that honor!

Also, this is completely irrelevant but have you seen Obama’s speech writer, Jon Favreau?

Who knew?

Anyway, Collegiettes, who’s your pick for American royalty? Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres? Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith? Who’s your favorite power couple? Get to thinking and talking about it; it’s what our Founding Fathers would want.
