10 Reasons Why Going to a Different College Than Your Best Friend Sucks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

1. Time change:

An hour ahead or an hour behind makes you feel like your best friend is never on the same page as you when you call them. This leading to the inevitable catch up: “Oh I forgot it’s earlier there.” And the awkward sigh afterwards.

2. Miscommunications:

When you’re 400 miles from your favorite person your two options for communication fall to calling and texting. For most, phone calls aren’t comfortable because it isn’t face to face as our daily interactions are, lending us to pace or fumble awkwardly to keep hands busy. As for texting, we’ve all had experiences that have taught us the hard way that sarcasm isn’t communicated as well over text.

3. You Have to Worry about TMI with new friends:

No longer are you able to talk about the unmentionables with people you meet at college because let’s face it, they’re just not as accustomed to you. With your best friend who you have known for years you tend to be more open about your weird habits because you know theirs. They just get you.

4. You Miss Their Birthday:

You can send as many birthday cards or ship chocolates to them, but nothing beats having your partner in crime beside you to celebrate. Because seeing them this one day a year is the gift. Too sentimental? Don’t forget that the person who knows you best, aka your best friend, also gives you the best gifts ever which is something definitely worth missing.

5. You only have one closet:

It’s exhausting how a girl’s outfit seems to make or break her day. But swapping articles of clothing between the two of you makes sense when you pre-approved all of their purchases anyway. But with the two of you apart, you’re back to just your set of your same old, same old.

6. You can’t approve their hookups:

They can’t see the guy you’ve been eyeing for weeks and give you the red light: meaning he’s not worth your time or the green light: meaning he’s a keeper… so she’ll have to rely on her instincts and tell you how it works out post hookup.

7. You Don’t See Them Everyday:

Anyone else look forward to struggling together with their best friend through the every day? Because if we’re being honest with ourselves, everything’s better with them by your side.

8. No one understands your guys’ inside jokes:

Years of time spent together breeds inside jokes and strange nicknames stemming from stories too detailed to explain to others. Whether it’s a sarcastic “that’s cute” or something more complicated, all of these jokes at college are useless unless the person who lived through them is with you.

9. Letters Take Forever to Come:

Yours truly tells you they sent a letter that day and you check your mailbox every day, sighing as the sight of it being empty every time. Just when it gets to the point where you decide that it must have been lost in the mail – it arrives! Let me tell you from experience that mail strengthens the lesson of patience.

10. You Miss Them:

Best friends are often spoken of as the ‘family that you choose.’ Being that you’re fond of them, the distance that college entails only serves to make you miss them even more.
