Trends to keep in mind for the Fall semester

Wardrobe must-haves for Fall, 2013 and Do’s and Don’ts of the Fashion Trends

Fall can be a tricky time of year, especially up here in Maine. One day its 90 degrees and tomorrow it will snow. Here are some fashion must-haves for the up and coming Fall 2013 semester.

1.     Emerald green is the top color for Fall 2013. Play with gold jewelry, or even colored jewelry, but keep it tasteful. A simple button up white shirt with an emerald green pencil skirt is a chic way to grab the attention of the whole room, add a little gold bling around your neck and you have an adorable outfit, add a pair of black tights and black pumps and your look is flawless. Do: Look for structures in the skirt, make sure it fits right, Don’t: think green is not your color, try it and have fun with it!

2.     Menswear fabrics. Herringbone fabric, pinstripes and houndstooth are all in this fall. Pinstripes being the most versatile, they come in a range of colors, you can easily pair black pants with a white pinstripe with a white button down shirt and button down colored sweater. Do: Find a print that works best for your body type, Don’t: Buy actual menswear.

3.      Hats. Hats are in this fall, anything from a floppy knit het to a fedora. My favorite look would have to be a black wool fedora and a black wool pea coat. Not only does it match, but the fedora is timeless. Do: have a range in your hats, Don’t: wear a hat if you have an up-do; you will look like you have no hair.

4.     Leopard print. One of the hottest trends this fall is probably already in your closet, so dust it off and sport the look. Leopard is hot this fall, if you know how to wear it, play with colored leopard print but make sure it matches! Do: Brown and black is always in style for leopard print so go with the natural, Don’t: over do it! You don’t want to look like a leopard, just make the men think you are fierce like a leopard.

5.     Pastel coat. Designers have been creating coats in colors including baby blue, buttercup yellow, lavender and powder pink. These coats range in lengths from trench coats, pea coats, or a chic blazer. Pair these pastel coats with anything from a pair of white jeggings and a matching pair of pastel flats or a sexy strappy high heel pastel sandal, or a pastel blazer and a pair of black Calvin Klein trousers. Do: Consider the rest of your outfit when playing with color, Don’t: be afraid to experiment with color!

6.     Winter white will never be out of style but is popping up in a lot of the fashion shows. White jeans are a good way to sport your winter white, but make sure you are not adding too much white! Do: incorporate white jeans or a white pea coat into your fall wardrobe and stand out in a crowd of dark jackets, Don’t: Wear too much white, it will  wash you out. Pops of white are your friend but add color.

7.     Military looks. Going into this semester, give off the impression of being “strong” with a military structured  jacket or slim military green pant. Do: Add accents to your military pieces, gold works extremely well as does lace, Don’t: avoid the girly versions of the “utilitarian” trend.

This fall make sure you are prepared with today’s top fashion trends that are hitting the major runways. Make sure that no matter what you are wearing, own it, be confident in what you are wearing. Fashion is an investment, so invest wisely! Happy shopping!!!
