Natural Allergy Relief

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

It’s that time of year again for allergies to start affecting all of us. Runny noses, watering eyes, and congestion seem to take over, leaving you tired and sniffly.  Here are a few tips on natural allergy relief through eating a healthy diet rather than over the counter medications that never seem to help!

1. Broccoli

Broccoli is high in vitamin C, which helps to diminish allergy side affects, and is part of the crucifer family that has been proven to clear blocked sinuses.

2. Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons, and limes, are also high in vitamin C, which helps to relieve blocked-up sinuses.

3. Kale

Like broccoli, kale is part of the crucifer group, and helps to relieve blocked-up sinuses.  Kale does not only need to be used as a garnish, but can be consumed raw or cooked.  One way that I like to prepare and consume kale is in the oven, making kale chips.  It only takes 3 simple ingredients- kale, salt & pepper (if desired), and oil.

4. Onions

Onions and garlic are packed with quercetin, which is a flavonoid that acts as an antioxidant, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties.  Research has shown that onions have the highest known quercetin content, so cut some up and throw them on your sandwiches, salads, or your pizza!
