Simple Steps to Prepare for a Trip Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Many students travel abroad at some point in their college career. While it can be very exciting, going abroad can be nerve-wracking and scary. Upon arrival, you may go into culture shock because it is nothing what you are used to; you have to adapt to a new way of life without looking like a total “American.”

Here are some easy ways to prepare for your trip before traveling across the pond:

Stock up on items you may need or want
While abroad, it may be difficult to come across your favorite shampoo, favorite eyeliner or the medication you may need to take on a daily basis. Stock up on things you know you will want or need, especially medications. These items are an exception when it comes to over packing: it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Save money!
This is IMPORTANT. When you are abroad, you will be spending your life savings, whether it is on shopping, food, alcohol, traveling, etc. Most students think it’s better to shop beforehand (fess up, ladies you know its true) because they want to look their best when taking pictures to put on Facebook and Twitter. When you get to your destination, especially Europe, where they are a year ahead of us on fashion, you will wish you didn’t buy that scarf you just HAD to have from Forever 21. Save because you know the clothes and style will be ten times hotter where you will be than they are now in the States. And face it, who really cooks every day in college? You will be eating out and going out a lot, so save that money for an extra round of shots.

Spend time with your friends and family
Since you will be gone for a period of time, spend some time with loved ones before heading out. You will miss them once you’re gone and sometimes skyping doesn’t work out! Have a night out on the town, go out to eat with your parents, have movie nights. Any time spent together will be worth it!

Talk to friends who have been abroad before
This is especially important if you are going to a place where you know people have gone. Ask them questions like where are the good places to eat, (if you’re going to Italy, ask where the good gelato places are) where are the good night clubs, if I want to travel, which agency should I go through when I get there? Most students know the ins and outs of the city, so ask them for advice! They will be happy to help you.

As I have heard, going abroad is an experience that nobody regrets. Before going, you may be excited and anxious at the same time, but don’t worry because other people in your program will be feeling the exact same way! Always remember to be safe and HAVE FUN. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, take advantage of it!

She has been a part of the Her Campus University of Iowa team since it was founded in 2010 and is a member of Ed on Campus. She has grown to love magazine writing and editing and if she somehow can't land her dream job (to be Carrie Bradshaw), she wouldn't mind settling for a job in the magazine industry. If nothing else, she hopes to attend law school somewhere in the Bay Area out West, her favorite place to be. Since the age of 15, Emily spent her summers in California, doing internships and falling in love with San Francisco. Some of her other interests include her 4-month-old longhaired wiener dog Henry, blogging, celebrity gossip, sushi, Private Practice, fro-yo, being a journalism nerd, and anything involving good conversation with good people. Although she's not exactly sure of her plans for the future, she knows journalism will somehow be the driving force in her career.
