It’s Better to be Single During Valentines Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

It’s February in Iowa, the ground is covered in a foot of snow, the thoughts of spring break are lingering and love is in the air. At least for some people it is. Even though February is the shortest month of the year, the ever-present reminders of Valentines Day can make it seem endless. However, just because you don’t have that “special someone” doesn’t mean that you’re lacking. In my personal opinion, being single on Valentines Day is great! Here’s why:

  1. You don’t have to pretend to love the gift you’re given from CVS- Let’s be honest with ourselves, as poor college students, most of our our significant others aren’t making trips to Jared or Kay jewelers, so we’ll have to settle with stuffed animals.
  2. You can spend time with the permanent loves in your life- Love doesn’t have to be celebrated in a romantic way. Show the people you love the most how much you care and how much you appreciate all that they do for you. Remember, boys come and go but your best friends; your family and your cats will be there forever.
  3. You can celebrate all the great single ladies of the world- Oprah Winfrey, Coco Chanel, Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, Mother Theresa, and Susan Boyle…Need I say more.
  4. You can get your flirt on- Boys are single too. Might as well have fun while we’re young.
  5. You can go see Fifty Shades of Grey with your girlfriends- No one will appreciate the fine physique of Christian Grey as much as your friends. Gushing over the steamy scenes sounds like the perfect night out.
  6. February 15th- All the leftover candy goes on sale. It’s the perfect time to stock up on much needed chocolate. Go ahead girl, get yourself those chocolate hearts, you’re an independent woman and you deserve it.
