I Got Eyelash Extensions Done and Here’s What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

You know when you wake up in the morning, roll out of bed and go to the mirror just to have that moment of horror where you’re like “wow this is what I’m looking like today?” Don’t you wish that you could just get up already feeling confident and powerful? Because I know that I’m beautiful and powerful on the inside, but sometimes I don’t want to put in the effort to do my makeup and make my outside match what my inside feels that day.

Well, I have found a solution to this occurrence, and it’s two words – eyelash extensions. That’s it, that’s the secret.

Eyelash extensions are essentially the greatest thing to ever happen to me, I know because I’m currently writing this on a flight to Cancun and the lovely flight attendant stopped me to tell me how beautiful they were. And they’re all thanks to Johanna a.k.a @makeyoface, a local licensed professional in microblading and eyelash extensions.

What Are Eyelash Extensions?

Let’s debunk some myths that are going around about eyelash extensions: They do not ruin your real lashes if they are done properly. When @makeyoface does them, she takes the time to make sure the lashes that she is applying aren’t too heavy for your natural lashes. If they are too heavy, and your natural ones are thin then it will cause them to fall out along with the real ones.

You can get them styled in any way and customized to your own face. I personally like to be as boujee as humanly possible, so mine are currently long and full. I did this partially because I am on my way to Cancun so I wanted to look extra while I was there. A couple of months from now (because yes, I will continue to get them done) I may choose to get them a little more natural. Johanna doesn’t do pre-made clusters, she applies individual lashes on a client to client basis.

Appointments typically last anywhere from 1.5-2.5 hours, depending on what you want done. The first time it took a little under two hours, and when I got them filled two weeks later it only took around 45 minutes because I took care of them.

Maintenance and How Long They Last

Lashes shed, that’s just straight facts. In fact, it is lash shedding season, so like you naturally lose your hair on your head, you also lose your lashes in the same way. I got my eyelashes done around three weeks ago, and while I did shed a lot of the lashes, many still remained on my face. @makeyoface said that they stayed on so well because I kept good care of them by cleaning them with the brushes she gave me and not wearing a lot of eye makeup because the liquid can cause them to fall out.

We all remember that scene in Legally Blonde when Elle Woods called out the woman for not knowing that you couldn’t shower right after getting a perm? Well, the same thing applies for lashes, you absolutely cannot get them wet before 24 hours because the glue has to curate.

If you take care of them you can get them filled every 2-3 weeks to keep them full and voluminous.

Is It Worth It?

If you want extensions, you have to go in knowing that they do require maintenance and touch ups, which do cost a fair amount of money. The first session (including a two week touch up) is around $220, while getting them filled is around $85. I know what you’re thinking, that you probably don’t need to spend that much money when you can just put mascara on, we’re broke college kids we can’t afford to do that. Well I say that you can’t put a price on how confident they make me feel. I literally never wear any makeup, not even foundation anymore because of the extensions. Eyelash extensions make even the best mascaras look like the ugly stepchild, I swear.
