How to Get Rid of the Winter Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

With second semester setting in and the holiday season just finishing up, there are many reasons you may have the winter blues. Living in Iowa City though, (and in my opinion a town with many opportunities) there are plenty of things to do to get your mind off the below 0 temperatures outside. Some of my favorite activities involve being inside and outside, in case you want to avoid the harsh weather. This is a great time of year to snuggle up with a good book and a cup of coffee or have a fun weekend with your friends. No matter what you decide to do, enjoy it!

10. Build a snowman/ Go sledding with friends (We have plenty of snow that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon)

9. Bake cookies. This is the opportune moment to try all those Pinterest recipes you’ve pinned all year long.

8. Find a good book, and get lost in it. Many times in college we don’t get to enjoy books we actually want to read! It’s important to make time to enjoy what you want, rather than what your professor assigns you.

7. Take artsy pictures! There are many opportunities in Iowa City to take artsy pictures that will make all your friends jealous of your photography abilities, just take a second look at the things that are often overlooked.

6. Get some exercise. This is the perfect time to get in the spitting image of fitness that you want for spring break. The rec is always a great place to customize your own workout routine, and there are many classes offered there. Take a chance and try a class you wouldn’t normally take!

5. If you’re feeling creative, painting pottery is always a fun option. Fired Up is a local business that allows you to paint pottery.

4. Volunteer! There are many opportunities around campus to volunteer and do something good for the community.

3. Get involved on campus. There are many ways to get involved on campus through the many student organizations. There is a student organization for any interest, from Fashion Merchandising Club, to Dance Marathon, to even working with Her Campus. There is an opportunity for any interest.

2. With the semester just beginning, there aren’t many reasons to stress yet, but if you ever find yourself needing a break from studying or writing papers, take it. Everyone needs a Netflix binge day, especially since Fuller House will be premiering on Netflix soon!

1. There is nothing better to brighten up a day than to cuddle with a cute puppy! Petland is the go-to place to get free puppy snuggles when you are ever feeling down or miss your pet from home. The puppies there are guaranteed to be cute, snuggly and 100% fun!

There are many fun and exciting things to do in Iowa City and on campus. Don’t let the winter blues get you down: get out there and have fun!

Currently I am a sophomore at the Universtiy of Iowa majoring in Elementary Education. I love writing, especially about how wonderful our campus is!
