The sitcom and popular TV series, New Girl, has to be my favorite show, and definitely a comfort show at that. After watching the entire series multiple times and being a student at the University of Connecticut, I would say I am qualified for writing what the characters of New Girl would be like at UConn. The descriptions and majors of each character are based on their personalities and occupations throughout all seven seasons.

Jessica Day

As a passionate teacher and educator, Miss Jessica Day would be in the Neag School of Education for Elementary Ed. Being the enthusiastic and upbeat person she is, Jess would be involved in many student activities such as the knitting club and student government. Throughout New Girl, Jess constantly sings and dances. She would take classes in drama and potentially join an improv class for fun. As a proud UConn student, Jess would be involved in anything and everything. She would find volunteer opportunities by tutoring kids at neighboring middle schools or elementary schools. UConn has various volunteer opportunities at local schools where Jess would gain experience and form connections with her students. Additionally, Jess would not know about sports but would show up with the most school spirit and cheer on the team.

Schmidt

In New Girl, Schmidt works in marketing. Several scenes show Schmidt pitching ideas in meetings and working in a corporate setting. Eventually, Schmidt and Nick own The Griffin, a bar. However, it makes sense for Schmidt to major in marketing or communications at UConn. In an episode when Schmidt and Jess are talking, Schmidt says “You know, my diploma says that I majored in communications, but my heart says that I majored in Nicholas studies.” Schmidt is the only character that explicitly shares his major in the show. At UConn, Schmidt would love to party and would join a business fraternity in order to have connections and grow his marketing skills. Since Schmidt is a ladies’ man, he would join clubs and activities that are majority female to meet girls.

Nick Miller

All of us New Girl fans know that Nick Miller had different occupations such as being a bartender and a writer. Prior to being a bartender and bar owner, he passed the bar exam. As surprising as it may be, Nick Miller aspired to be a lawyer at one point in time. Because of his old aspirations, I gave Nick a criminal justice minor and a major in English. A major in English is because of Nick’s passion for writing in his free time. Towards the later seasons, Nick pursues his dream of becoming a writer by publishing several books called The Pepperwood Chronicles. At first, he is timid in sharing his work but later goes on to talk about his books and traveling to talk about them. In New Girl, it is revealed that Nick was a hippie during his undergraduate career so it would make sense for him to skip class often. He would play hackysack in front of the Union to impress girls. Nick’s main hustle to make money would be bartending at Huskies or Teds.

Winston

In New Girl, it is revealed that Winston’s first career was professional basketball in Latvia. After his injury, he hosted a radio show where he narrated sports games. To be able to host the radio show, Winston would major in journalism, specifically sports journalism. Although he was a great talk show host, he later realized he wanted to be a part of the LAPD. To cater to his last occupation of being a cop, Winston would minor in criminal justice to learn more about the law. As a UConn student, Winston would be the life of the party and make friends anywhere and everywhere on campus. Due to Winston’s eccentric personality, it would be fitting for him to join the most random clubs such as the birding club.

Cece

Cece is a bubbly and smart character on New Girl. I could see her in a sorority at UConn to have connections to get into parties and take cute photos. Although Cece did not go to college in the show and instead pursued modeling, she ended the show by becoming a business owner. She found her passion by owning a modeling agency rather than being a full-time model. Cece would major in Business Administration to further her entrepreneurial skills. During college, Cece would model on the side of her schoolwork. Cece would be very passionate about issues on campus and speak out against them with Jess.

Coach

Coach stays true to his nickname by being a gym teacher and a personal fitness trainer on New Girl. Out of the whole cast, Coach is the most concerned with health and being physically fit. Being in Neag School of Education for physical ed would suit Coach because Jess gets Coach a job working at the middle school where she was the vice principal. As we know, gym teachers also take on the role of health teachers in schools, so Coach could also major in exercise science to know how the body works and pursue his passion for fitness. Those who major in exercise science can go into fields such as fitness training, physical therapy, and coaching. At UConn, Coach would always be seen at sports games, especially basketball. At the games, he would get angry at the coach and would try to step in. It would be fitting for him to try and try to give orders to the team and potentially even get kicked out of Gampel for being a distraction. Coach’s favorite place at UConn would be the Rec Center, and he would be there 24/7. During his free time, Coach would join intramural sports teams and take them too seriously.

Hopefully, you enjoy New Girl as much as I do and found a character that you can relate to. Happy streaming before they take it off Netflix!
